RYA Navigation Handbook

Really useful

An excellent book. Clearly written and makes a high content subject easily understood and enjoyable to read about. I'll be doing the day skipper exam later this year. I'd recommend buying the small 90 page RYA Yachtmaster: Advanced Navigation Theory, Safety and Seamanship book as well as it makes a fine quick reference to this and the other components of day skipper and beyond. Brilliant. I'd give it 6 stars if I could.

An updated edition of this excellent book. A much " easier" read than the first edition, glad I purchased it for revision

Good, useful practical book a must for anyone who is looking to improve their navigation skills. It gives you some useful easy to use tips to safely navigate your boat. I would recommend it.

This is a well structured introductory book for maritime navigation. It provides a solid foundation for further studies (and practical exercises on the see) for people who would like to learn sailing. I think it is worthwhile read.

Easy to read and well written

Aunque me ponía que era nuevo, me llegó como si hubiera sido usado… muy útil y viene una parte de información del radar

Nachdem ich die theoretische Prüfung zum Schweizer Hochseeschein erfolgreich abgelegt habe hat mich mein Lehrer auf die Ausbildung zum Yachtmaster aufmerksam gemacht. In der Folge habe ich mir einige Bücher und Lernmaterial zugelegt. Aus diesen sticht das vorliegende Buch klar heraus. Natürlich ist es eine Herausforderung, sich erst einmal mit den spezifischen englischen Ausdrücken und den nicht sofort ersichtlichen Unterschieden vertraut zu machen (z. B. port tack = Backbordbug [Wind von Backbord], wäre jedoch im deutschen Sprachgebrauch Steuerbordbug [Schlag geht nach Steuerbord]), aber dafür werden dann fortgeschrittene Techniken erklärt, die man sowohl beim SBF See als auch beim Hochseeschein vergeblich sucht. Insbesondere wird man auch regelmässig daran erinnert, dass man sich nicht zusehr auf die Segnungen der Technik (z. B. GPS) verlassen sollte, da das beste GPS unbrauchbar ist, wenn man bei der Eingabe der Wegpunkte Fehler macht oder - schlimmer - das Gerät ausfällt. Aus meiner Sicht eine Pflichtlektüre für den verantwortungsvollen Skipper.

I'm only a quarter of the way through, but I can already say that there's loads of good information in this book and I've learnt so much already. The concepts are explained very well and it's certainly worth reading before starting the RYA Essential Navigation & Seamanship and then Day Skipper courses.
