Gives Professional Range of Sanders a run for their money
Green bodied Bosch tools is part of their range of DIY tools as opposed to the blue bodied tools which are designed for professionals. I usually buy professional tools from Dewalt, Makita and Bosh although I started with Black & Decker DIY and Pro ranges 40+ years ago when I was 18. The main difference is that professional tools are designed to be used for long hours at a time (as well as for many days in the month) so I do not expect pro tools to burn out so easily. However, since I already have x2 B & D mouse sanders, Bosch 1/3 sheet and mouse, a belt sander, detail sander and detail sander attachment on the DeWalt multitool, I really wish to avoid spending more cash on sanders but I must. That's because the other danders do not provide the fine finish which a Random Orbital Sander could schieve. Thus choosing this PEX 400 instead of the PEX 300 is a compromise as I know it will hardly get used as compared to other sanders already in the collection. By the way, I would still suggest a person starting career into DIY to choose a mouse sander first. This design could get into many corners and the tool is cheap to buy which is why I tend to have differend paper grades already attached to different mouse sanders when I start a project. I also chose the PEX 400 because it has an extra handle as compared to the 300. I find using this handle together with the main handle more natural and I could apply more even a pressure to the work as compared to the two (ie one less handle) provided on PEX300. Top marks to Bosch for providing tool carry cases. It is one of the reason why they cose more than other (DIY) brands but the benefit and convenience to me is worth far more than extra cost of the cases. For example, I stash the tools under the stairs. If they didn't come ready supplied with cases I would have to find one that is just right for each tool. Yes I have great big Dewalt DS300 and DS400 Tooughsystem of boxes but they are awkward to stash under the stairs; and to use one tool I would have to find the right box. Now because the Bosch tools come in different recognisable cases, I can spot the one I want easily. This is very convenient at such times as driving myself and only the tools I need to fis a job at mum's house. Another good thing Bosch supplied is a gadget to apply the sanding disks to the pad. Simple gadget and it works. After all the good points I thought Bosch could do no wrong. Not so. One sheet of sanding disc is supplied with the tool, To be polite, I was not impressed by how flimsy it is. More fool you Mr Bosch, for I have ordered 5x packs of 10 of Makita branded dics of different grades from Amazon witout looking at any offering by Bosch and where Bosch are packs of 5. Fingers crossed, these Makita ones are thicker and have more hairs on the velcro back so hopefully won't fly off during use.

Bosch PEX 400 AE
Ordered this on Monday here in Ireland, arrived Wednesday morning, good start!! Read a recent review about the cheap case, not so with this one, good solid built case, very sturdy, sander fits perfect and ample space for spare discs. I am not sanding the golden gate bridge, but I am a keen DIYer, so a good middle of the road sander was what I wanted. Boy did I get one!! Got straight to work on a project I am working on, and it is awesome. I was amazed how fast it cleaned up the wood I needed doing, quick and powerful, only set it to number 4 on the scale and it did the job with ease. You need to frequently empty the filter box if you are doing a lot of work, but you can attach a vacuum if you wish. Filter box is easy to open if you flick through the instruction book and do it once or twice, fits snugly where it should after doing so. It comes with a handy tool for popping the discs on in the right place, also comes with one disc, 80 grit which is quite course so grab a pack of discs if your buying. All in all I am very pleased with this sander, it is a little belter!! :)

Great sander, terrible case
Lets get the bad out of the way first, the case is absolutely awful and feels cheap. It's made of very thin moulded plastic and almost looks like a throw-away item. It's large and does the job of storing the tool, but I really expected better quality. Maybe I'm spoilt by quality DeWalt and Milwaukee cases, but these Bosch cases feel and look cheap. Anyway, the manual looks like it was printed on recycled paper, it's hard to describe as I've never seen paper like this. It doesn't go into much detail and is very basic. The sander itself is good, it doesn't vibrate too much, even at high speed and is fairly quiet. The speed dial and on/off sliding switch are both well located and easy to operate. The filtration system works well and removes most of the dust. It does this by a fan cowl that's on the top of the rotating base plate. As the cowl turns, it creates a vacuum which sucks the dust from the disc's 8 holes and blows it into the storage compartment. Unfortunately, the filtration compartment is basically moulded plastic that clips together, and it can be a bit tricky to remove and dismantle. This may be because mine is new and it may get easier with use, but luckily it's not something that has to be done often. The velcro system for the sanding discs works well, and you get a clever small plastic contraption that helps you locate the disc on the plate correctly. The power lead, although I haven't measured it, seems a generous length. Even though this model is more expensive than the others in the PEX range, it has an aluminium base plate, a more powerful motor and an extra handle which can be unscrewed to reach tight spots. NOTE: When buying sanding plates, you need to be careful as there are two revisions of this model. Earlier models have a sanding plate with 3 holes and the later one, which I have, has 4. Reliable, steady and effortlessly smooth
We’ve been using this sander while we’re renovating our Victorian house, and it has worked very well so far. On the walls it leaves a smooth, even finish, and on the wood of the doors it has been quick and consistent. It feels steady in the hand and the vibration is controlled enough to make longer sessions manageable. The dust collection isn’t perfect, but it does reduce the mess, which already helps when working indoors. The machine feels solid and the movement stays stable even when we need a bit more pressure. Overall, a reliable and easy-to-use sander that gives clean results on both walls and wood. A good choice if you want something straightforward that still delivers a neat, consistent finish.
