Is there much strategy involved?

Yes, what i really enjoyed about Star Wars Rebellion was asymmetric nature of the factions. The Empires concerns are certainly not the Rebellions and its the differences in these factions that create for a good thematic strategy game.

Do I need the cards holders and foam box Amazon recommends to accompany the game?

No they are not needed, however they are a nice addition to neatly pack everything.
