1970s BBC comedy series that 40 years later is still extremely funny and applicable to present day societal issues
Having grown up in America, I had never seen The Likely Lads until buying this DVD box set a couple months ago on the recommendation of my English husband. He wanted to revisit a television series he remembered from his elementary school days (specifically the later series that aired in the 70s) and I wanted to see what the fuss was all about. I absolutely love this collection, particularly the later shows in colour. It's amazing how relevant the financial, personal, political and societal issues, that are covered in this series, are to today's same problems/issues in Britain! (I've lived in Britain since university). Even though the show primarily revolves around these two close friends and their conversations...it's never boring. I like the contrast between the two and the comedic tension it causes in their relationship(s). They both represent varying aspects and opinions of British society: one aspires to middle class life and all it's trappings while the other firmly holds onto his working class ideals and "old" Labour Party sentiments.....and they take the "mick" out of each for it and it's hilarious...self effacing English wit and humour at its best! I had never heard of these actors before...they're fantastic! I've watched the DVDs twice already! This particular set has all the series. Buy it, you won't regret it!

Well written, well performed, insightful and funny
A delight. The 60s episodes show their age a bit but the writing and performances throughout are top class. The 1970s episodes - exploring how the two main characters’ lives have diverged six or seven years on - are a treat. It’s very funny and a real insight into an era and a particular social milieu

All surviving TV shows on DVD for a mere tenner.
An excellent reminder of how life for a couple of Geordie lads was in the 60's & 70's.This is one of the rare comedies of that era that travels time well and is still funny, as well as still being apt, in the 21st century rather than making you cringe with embarrassment like a lot of comedies of that era do ('Love thy neighbour' and 'On the buses' are two such examples). My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed every episode. Had the set included the 'Likely Lads' film as well then I would have given it 6 stars if that were possible. If you are of a certain age then buy it and relive those times again. If you are too young to remember TLL/WHTTLL the first time around then do you self a favour and invest a tenner to see what you missed. It'll be one of the best tenners that you ever spent.

Classic 1970's comedy, but old-style copy protected DVD's
I enjoyed watching some extracts on a popular website, which also brought back memories of my Dad almost splitting his sides when they were first shown in the 1970's. I just had to buy this set and it arrived very quickly. Unfortunately I've had no luck trying to watch the DVD's my Blu-ray player seems to have a fault and a very old DVD player just gives disk read errors. As a last resort I tried an old laptop which has a DVD drive and ... success - they played. But the laptop's sound quality is poor and I want to watch the episodes on my TV. Unfortunately attempts to rip them with common and well known tools failed as the DVDs have RPC copy protection - very rare since the 200X's. At this point I gave up - I'll stick to streaming hence forth.

Amazing!
I can't tell you enough how much I love this series. Watching Terry and Bob ducking and diving their way through life, trying (and mostly failing) to pick up girls as they meander their way through their somewhat pointless existence, trying to make sense of it all while staring down into a pint of ale. If you've never seen this before please give it a try. The early black & white episodes might not be as funny as the later 'Whatever' series but it's all essential viewing as it introduces you to the characters and sets up Bob and Terry's early history together which they often mention or look back on in the following series. Be patient and stick with it as you will really grow to love Terry and Bob. It also has some very poignant and soul searching moments which I could very much relate to. I love how the series left me with the feeling that Terry and Bob were a couple of guys that I used to know, like old friends. This is my favourite series of all time, and in my opinion, essential viewing.

Good escape
It’s like going back in time to when I was the same age as the two lads…. Enjoying life and living life to the full.

first rate sitcom
Well written, and acted. Splendidly funny situations and the two principals don't appear to be acting, they are so natural, so much just the part. Is it too much to say that, although these series are now quite old, nothing since has bettered them and few have matched them? What a pity that more of the episodes had not been saved. Of course they are of a period, but if you recall that period then these gems are timeless.

the likely lads
i grew up watching the likely lads.all the surviving episodes are here, its a pity that the BBC destroyed so much material, but what we have here is terrific and it includes, when the boys joined the army. moving on to WHATEVER HAPPENED TO THE LIKELY LADS,this is the complete set and includes the 1974 christmas special.the whole series of THE LIKELY LADS is really well written and its a shame that the two stars ,fell out ,particularly as RODNEY BEWES is in poor health.i think it would have been great to have a further series ,set when they were old men.we must not forget BRIDGET FORSYTHE and SHIELA FEARN,who played THELMA and AUDREY so wonderfully.this set is really worth having, the quality is really good, even on the B/W 60s series.

I have only watched two of the disks so far but I am not disappointed; it has aged quite well and still makes me laugh out loud from time to time.
