Nemasys leatherjacket killer (100sqm pack)

Our house is built on a site that has red sandstone not far below the surface. In fact digging the founds was quite problematic and required heavy machinery. As a result, we do not have much depth of soil and in some areas of our front lawn, it’s only a few inches. This has the dual effect of making these areas vulnerable to hot dry spells and, for whatever reason, attractive to crane flies to lay their eggs. Their larvae then eat the grass roots. In the past this has resulted in large bare patches. I tried Nemasys last year 2022 and saw an immediate improvement with our lawn looking better than it has for years. Then we had the early summer of 2023 which resulted in my grass being burnt and dying back. I applied Nemasys again a few weeks ago and have seen major improvements since with a green recovery which suggests that part of my problem continued to be leatherjacket infestation rather than just being burnt! The product requires taking a little care to mix it in the correct proportions and then use a watering can with a coarse rose. It also has a short shelf life so buy it when you intend to use it, otherwise being a biological product, it will die on the shelf!. It goes quite a long way. My front lawn is around 40/50sq metres and rear about 80/90sq metres and one pack of Nemasys easily dealt with the front lawn and left me with enough to apply it to troublesome patches on the rear lawn. I am not green fingered by any means but find this product has worked very well for me and can recommend it.

I had a 'worst case' type situation with leatherjackets in my new-build back garden. The grass was *entirely* eaten away by the time I learned it was probably an infestation of some kind; when I scraped the remaining moss with a hand rake, not only did it come up easily, it revealed a veritable hoard of leatherjackets. The ground was filthy with them i.e. approx. 10 grubs revealed with every foot-and-a-half of soil raked, and the soil had a rotten stench. I raked off the last remnants of moss and then treated the soil as directed. It was tempting to just use guess work on the amount of powder to water because the instructions are quite exacting but given that I had a bad infestation I decided to stick to the letter of the instructions and applied it exactly. I watered the soil every day religiously as directed for the next four weeks (boy was I glad to get it over with) and then waited. In the meantime I sprinkled a little grass seed down and this sprang up quickly but I decided to pull it all up just to be as sure as I could that the leatherjackets were all gone before I attempted growing a new lawn because if they weren't all destroyed, the remainder would just attack the new grass and they'd be especially hungry too. So I waited a couple of months longer. I bought another packet of Nemasys ready for Aug. and am now preparing the ground to use this. Although it's not actually necessary, I want to turn the soil over to remove stones to give the new lawn the best chance to grow given that the grass I had was turf and the soil that came with that looks to have been eradicated. In turning over the soil, I have found hardly any leatherjackets. I would estimate that 98% have been killed, unearthing just three or four in several feet of digging. In short, the product works but, as it states, it can take several months to fix the problem (and you will want to be sure because leatherjackets that turn into craneflies return to the same breeding ground to lay *their* eggs).

Best grass seed I've used

I'm a professional lawn specialist. These have about a 70% success rate provided you follow the instructions exactly, and apply it in October when the larvae are in their instar one phase. By spring time when they are in instar three or four you cant even kill the blighters with Acelypryn (the only licenced insecticide for LJ control). So, read the instructions and apply in October. The problem with nematodes is that if they didn't work, you wont know until it's too late.

We’ve bought this product several times now, it’s been as effective as possible in helping to control the leather jackets in our lawn. Easy to apply with simple instructions. Make sure you keep refrigerated if you don’t use immediately.

It's a bit difficult reviewing something that you applied as a preventative measure, so you cannot tell if it really worked, other than the fact that the bad thing didn't happen! However, I have used Nemasys products before (Chafer Grub killer) to clobber a previous active infestation eating my garden form the roots up and it worked a treat. Maybe it was the warm autumn, but our lawn was absolutely CRAWLING with Daddy Long Legs - as you walked across it you would kick up a cloud of these insects. They weren't there for fun, so having spent a couple of years getting the lawn in good shape after some building work the thought of it being eaten by leatherjackets was not a good one. This stuff is simple to apply and good value for enough to do the whole garden. Lawn looking as lush as ever, so £19 well spent on prevention in my book!! P.S: This product also keeps Tigers and Bears away. I haven't had any of them in my garden either! ;-)

Well I've used these and there are still signs of the little critters ..so not sure if you have to reapply every year. Initially it cured the problem. Easy to apply. Recommended.

Although my review shows this as September Application it was in fact the May Application I purchased. I have been plagued on a yearly basis for some time by the problem of leatherjackets in my garden. Yellow and also bald patches in the garden where the grass has been eaten. It has always been an uphill struggle to deal with this until now. This product is the business and does exactly what it says on the tin. Even though I used this product probably about two weeks late, according to the instructions, within a couple of weeks it was obvious the leatherjackets were being killed. Now after about 6 weeks I have a luscious lawn. Much prefer to use this rather than pesticides previously used. This product is totally natural (eel worms which attack and eat the leatherjackets) and is perfectly safe for pets and birds in the garden. I will be ordering a further batch in September. It is without question the best and most effective over the counter product I have ever used to control this problem. Just follow the instructions to the letter and your garden should be free of leatherjackets in a relatively short period of time. As for the supplier - Green Gardener - they were first class and had the product to me within two days. Would definitely order products from them again. UPDATE - I am surprised at the two negative reviews posted and can again only reiterate that this product worked 100% for me. It was not my imagination that my garden went from having almost bald patches and grass yellowing and dying, to being lush green after using only this product. Anybody using the product needs to follow the instructions to the letter, and also be aware that it is my understanding that when this pest chooses a particular garden, it will return every season to lay eggs (just like a homing pigeon). So this treatment needs to be applied every season. I have used it for a number of seasons now with the same successful results.
