How can I attach this to a belt? Awkward at a party?

The best way to attach this to a belt is how they did it on the tv show. Get a roll of heavy duty velcro, and attach one piece to the belt, and the other to the back of the communicator. Works very well for me.

yes, the grill is plastic, as is the entire communicator. But it is by no means flimsy. the grill flips open and turns on the communicator, which has a 'swirly' center center. It's buttons light up. One button, when pressed, has prerecorded messages. the center button, when held down for 5 seconds, and when you close the communicator, results in you getting a call from Spock. While entirely plastic, I am completely pleased with its functionality and durability.

what kind of batteries does it take and are they easy to change?

It takes 3 -AAA batteries and it should be easy to change . Don't really know cuz Italy an unopened box
