So loud it comes with ear plugs!
This engraver is loud. I know other reviews say this too, but I cannot stress it enough. There is good reason they include a pair of ear plugs with this product! It works well if you're engraving with the grain of wood, but it does tend to jump a bit if you try to engrave against the grain of the wood (over the natural lines). I have not tried it on metal yet, but it is functional on wood. I had to return the first one I received because the mechanism to open and close it was jammed. The replacement one works fine. My kids wanted it for craft projects, but this is going to have to be an outside-only tool due to the volume. It comes with a warning to only use it for a few minutes at a time. I'm not sure if this is for engine heat issues or so you don't end up losing your hearing. I can't imagine wanting to keep it on for more than just scratching a name or number into a project due to the sound.

Rather loud but does work decently
It's hard to really tell the difference in the 5 speed setting as the loud noise sure doesn't change. But it does a fair job on smooth clean metals which is what I got it for. Definitely more geared towards a beginner, It's just surprisingly loud.

Didn't Work Well on Wood Coasters
This pink engraver looks like it would be a great kit that comes with several tips that could be used to create some awesome designs. The engraving unit itself appears to be well made, encased in a hard pink plastic that is ergonomically designed to be held similar to a pencil. The kit includes three engraving tips, along with the required Allan wrench, and two plastic stencils, one with letters and numbers and the other with symbols. Two features of this engraver gave me great hope that it would be a remarkable device. First, it has a regular power cord that plugs into a standard three-prong outlet. Second, the enclosed instructions warn that the noise will be very loud. The kit even includes foam ear plugs to protect your ears from the noise level. So, I had assumed that the three tips were different sizes or shapes that would allow you to create interesting patterns. But, it turns out they are all the same, which raised my first question. How quickly do the tips wear out if they've thought to include three of them up front? So far I've only used one, so I can't answer that right now.The unit itself has a shielded on/off switch on the back end. The top line of the tool extends approximately one half inch over the switch, preventing you from accidentally turning it on. On one side of the body of the tool is a dial that turns from one to five, which is supposed to adjust the speed of the engraver from "soft to hard," which I assume means slow to fast, since we're talking about speed. After examining all of its parts thoroughly and carefully reading the instructions, I drew an attractive spiral design onto a wooden coaster. I fully expected to be able to use this engraver to etch the design into the coaster. However, when it took me about forty-five minutes to etch one flower petal, with ten more petals and 12 other small embellishments yet to go, I thought perhaps I was using a material that couldn't be engraved. The small area that I had been able to engrave out of the wood is very rough and choppy looking. It certainly isn't what I would expect from an engraved surface. Because I was having so much trouble engraving the wood with the dial turned to Soft, I turned the dial up to five, or Hard. Unfortunately, I couldn't discern any difference in the engraving effect, other than the noise level becoming slightly louder.Next I thought I'd try it out on a resin disc left over from mixing epoxy resin. The picture attached here is a rudimentary attempt at carving my initials into the disc. I will admit that I didn't spend a lot of time on it, so I wasn't trying to finesse a design. As you can see, the letters are all fairly uniform in size and width of the strokes used to create the letters. What I did do was try holding the engraver at different angles, as well as trying it with the other two tips. No matter what I did, there was no difference in the result. Given the way my letters turned out, I don't believe that you could use this engraver to create an interesting design with lines of varying width or style.I do confess to being new to engraving, but I've been crafting for almost fifty years, using one or another technique, so I usually am able to pick up new techniques fairly quickly. Perhaps if I worked with this tool for awhile, I might be able to do more with it, but I certainly don't consider it useful for beginners. Unless, of course, you don't expect a beginner to want anything more than fat letters and numbers on common materials.I wanted to do so much more with this engraver, creating intricate designs on a variety of surfaces. However, I don't think this particular engraver will be the one I'll be using. As it is, this tool would be great for marking ownership of something or adding important information to something that doesn't require anything fancy. For my purposes, I'll need to keep looking.

Basic Engraver, Clumsy to Handle
This a functional engraving device that works as described, but has some limitations. It comes with three engraving tips and an extra holding screw for the tip, and a small hex tool to tighten. Runs on power cord, though instructions warn it should not be used more than 10 minutes or so and it will heat up - so need to let it cool before using again. So if you have a lot of work to do, 10 minutes does not last long, so probably only suitable for a hobbyist or to label a few things, etc. I do hand engraving intaglio work so already have several hand tools that frankly can do the same job for my purposes and are easier to use- this device is somewhat heavy to hold like a pen as shown in the pictures, and the shape and configuration is very awkward and difficult to hold if you are trying to do more finely controlled work. Also is very LOUD, lol! So a decent basic tool if this is what you are looking for, but for me I will probably return to my manual hand engraving/etching tools.

A Beginners Engraving Tool
It is not a soldering gun! This uses fast motion to help carve into substances. It was a cool idea for those that like to be creative with different methods. I tried this on wood, it took a while to get used to, but it worked! Metal was tricky to do, but as long as you learn how to handle the machine, this could work well for you.

Not sold on this but potential?
So far I've only used this on glass for the purpose of this review. It might be better on wood -- or with practice -- but it did look like a child did it! I used the stencil to do the heart, but that wasn't so great. I ended up going back over it by hand and did the other two hearts freehand. I did the M freehand. I have to say it doesn't look as childish when you aren't looking at a closeup picture, but you also can't see it very clearly without looking closely. This isn't quite what I was expecting, but I'll keep working with it. It did turn on and etch, so I'm giving it 4 stars.

Cool tool.
I love this, its really nice to have something like this to sign my DIY furniture etc. with. You have to practice a little bit to get the hang of it since its much heavier than a pen but once you get the hang of it its easy to use. Also make sure you practice on every material that you want to engrave since the depth the pressure etc changes with each material.
