Made an excellent gift
I gave this as a Christmas present and the recipient was delighted with it. There was a very comprehensive list of songs and music.

I have been saying I hate Benjamin Britten's music for decades. Wrong, I love it.

Listening to the recital on tv now with Britten and Pears
OK i was surprised that Britten ever went near folksongs because of his secret distain for his composition professor at the royal college of music who was Vaughan Williams. Of RVW he wrote “He is a very nice man but he shouldn’t conduct. It was hopeless ...I have never felt more depressed for English music”. Of course the songs were collected by RVW and Clarke collected the tunes that Britten set in this set. (Britten had this personality that to your face he could be charming but behind your back he could be as bitchy as any other queen) You can tell from the arrangements that the accompaniment is Britten because hear and there are smutterings of the Opera Peter Grimes. So it seems strange that Britten who hated English Music, folk tunes, the grand old man of english music RVW and Elgar. I have to say listening to Pears i have to say that he was mediocre singer. Not the best and not the worst. But certainly not a great tenor. Of course Pears was the long life love of Benjamin Britten and his lover in a time when homosexuality was illegal.
