I spent an afternoon cleaning out downspouts and underground drains. They were clogged from years of deferred maintenance. I added these to avoid any issues in the future. Lots of work on tall ladders but they’re well worth it. Easy to trim and install as they’re made from tin or aluminum.

You can conform these to square gutter openings pretty easily - that's what I was worried about before buying. Don't get tricked into buying square plastic ones because you think they will fit better. After a year or two of freezing and/or sunlight they crack apart.

Leaves float down the gutter and gum these up. As the water level in the gutter rises, it goes over and around the leaves and down the downspout. When the leaves have stopped falling, you clean the gutters out with a blower or a "Gutter Getter" cleaning scoop.
