Al-zahra’s Ghawazee Coat Pattern (Belly Dance)

Ghawazee coat pattern: very nice pattern, simple to use, traced a copy onto white tissue paper, didn't want to cut original. (In the scooped neckline) - The facing was interesting, pieces didn't fit together as one piece but instead sewed them to vest front as an unconnected facing, tried it on and wow the facing popped out and I have a quick change costume if the facing is pulled and flipped outward. Could actually back the facing with another colored fabric when facing is worn outward it becomes a quick change costume. I'd recommend this pattern if you are a sewer.

I have to add that you need to be aware of it's peculiariites--it's sized a bit small, so cut a bit bigger than you think you will need (you can always take it in) and the hole under the armpit is needed so that you can raise your arms (it was probably a practical design in period to keep sweat off the brocade. ) Also the pattern says it has "three views" but shows two. It's still an awesome pattern but it is definitely for the medium-advanced sewer. As far as I know it's one of the few patterns available for this style coat.

I have to buy another copy. I cut it to small (they claim that is an 8-10 but don't provide any inches measurements like you would find on a standard simplicity pattern). I have never been larger than a size two in my life so figured this would work. It was about three sizes too small. 00 perhaps. Very disappointing. If you are going to purchase this pattern, cut to the next size up and don't use good fabric on the first go around.

This pattern was supposed to go up to size 16, but they don't state in the product description what a size 16 means to this pattern maker. I wear a 16, and this pattern was way too small. The measurements inside the package measure to what I'd normally consider a 12 or 14 at best in most stores. In order to make this work for me, I had to tweak the pattern quite a bit. I'm sure it will look great when I finish, but I was hoping for less effort involved in the patterning and fitting.

If you are looking for a period piece, this is a great costume. I used it as a starting platform, so I could gear it for me. I live in Florida and so it can be warm. I didn't use the sleeves for the summer outfit, but did for winter. When using an expensive fabric, make a practice one first. Everyone is different. Depending on your size, you might have to make it bigger, for arms. So do a practice run with less expensive fabric.

This pattern is simple to use. It has few pieces and very easy to size up or down. It has several variations to the sleeve, neckline and tails of the coat. I have bought this a couple of times because when it comes on heavy paper it is hard to work with and rips. This last time I am going to cut out a muslin or duck cloth pattern and use it.

Love this pattern. Easy to work once you understand the instructions. The largest size might be pushing it for waists exceeding about 38 inches but it's just perfectly snug and elegant. The lowest neckline style cuts across the breasts, so consider what you'll wear underneath the coat. I'm combined this outfit (made in polyester brocade) with the Harem pants. The sleeves kinda lack instruction for the sheer attachments but any decent seamstress can make it work. Also, there's no instruction for sleeve lining to hide the seams of View 1 sleeves, so just cut off the drape (use View 2 sleeves) and attach a solid, seamless drape back to the sleeve for less work. Otherwise a good pattern and fun project.
