Indispensable, entertaining, beautifully presented.
Absolutely fantastic book!!!At last, a book on New York City Blues. Unbelievably this is the first ever book on such an important, yet overlooked subject; the postwar history of New York City blues. And it may possibly prove to be the definitive book on the subject. Not just for blues fans but for anyone interested in New York City’s artistic, cultural and sociological history. This book will appeal to those with a general interest to scholars alike.New York City Blues begins with an in-depth historical overview written by John Broven, a well-known writer and blues scholar. It is followed by a cornucopia of portraits and amazing, often very rare, photos. Every chapter begins with a really great intro to every personality interviewed. Additionally, the appendix features great items such as multiple listening lists, biographical data, air-play charts and a wonderful bibliography. Aside from author Larry Simon and his editor/collaborator John Broven, the book features contributions from other well-known writers and photographers.Truly an entertaining, informative, invaluable book that will introduce even seasoned blues listeners to a treasure trove of musical gems.

Great reading
An excellent book! New York has never had the same status that Chicago, Detroit, Memphis, Texas or the West Coast has. But this book gives the city and its blues musicians a very welcome presentation. Starts off with a exiting overview of New York Blues by John Broven, who previously has given us fine books on the music of Louisiana and New Orleans. Then follows very interesting and personal interviews with loads of musicians and producers made by Larry Simon, Richard Tapp, Valerie Wilmer and John Broven. Most, if not all, of the interviewed people have left us, a sad fact which makes this book even more important as an historic document. A book that no blues lover can be without.
