Clint Eastwood Collection [DVD] [1968]

The Universal Studios collection
In his early days, Clint was under contract with Universal and these are a collection of his films from their studios. Some classics, some not so memorable, but a great collection to have at this price.

An excellent collection
I'm a fan of Clint Eastwood, and if you are too, this collection is essential. It's also not bad for the price, as there are many films included and some are Mr Eastwood's best.PLAY MISTY FOR ME is the first film that he directed, and a pioneering one too (Fatal Attraction imitated it many years later).TWO MULES FOR SISTER SARA is a wonderful Western comedy, with a mellow humour. It stars Shirley Maclaine as a wandering nun.COOGAN'S BLUFF is interesting for any Clint fan as it was his first cop movie, made just before 'Dirty Harry', but the character that Eastwood portrays harks from Texas and is similar to a tough cowboy in mindset.HIGH PLAINS DRIFTER is one of Clint's best, not to mention darkest, Westerns. Playing yet another strange man-with-no-name wandering on muleback into a Western town, Clint's character here helps the locals to fight off marauding attackers in unexpected ways. I liked it best for the memorable characters (including a sympathetically portrayed dwarf) and imaginative imagery (the town becomes something of a character in itself).THE BEGUILED is an excellent film. I won't give away the ending, but be prepared for an unsettling turn of events when, during the American Civil War, a wounded soldier stumbles across a girls boarding school where, after being tended to, he develops more than one romantic relationship as the frustrated girls (and their female guardian) begin to compete jealously for his romantic attentions.THE EIGER SANCTION does not begin especially well but gets going after the first third or so of the movie. It has some great views of mountainous American landscapes, authentic rock-climbing scenes, Clint jogging in a very fetching tight red T-shirt (ok, that's more for the ladies), and a terrific climax. A pretty good little seventies thriller.JOE KIDD (a so-so Western) could be placed under the category 'throwaway movie', but it's fine for a chilled-out Sunday afternoon. Apparently the highlight of the movie (slight spoiler here), where a train simply smashes through the wall, was Clint's idea!BREEZY I have not seen yet, but it should be worth a watch if you are interested in Mr Eastwood's earliest directorial efforts seeing as he made it in 1973. He does not star but it looks like a charming love story between a young, hippyish girl and an older man.

Eastwood over the years
Nothing to dislike in any of this collection,if you like Clint Eastwood. Personally, I think he was at his best playing the silent watchful cowboy. His best for me was 'The good, the bad, and the ugly'. Had everything in it, even touched on the American civil war.

Some of Clint's best not available on other box sets
A mixed bag of short reviews here:-1. THE BEGUILED *****One of my favourite Eastwood movies amongst his early Hollywood exploits following the 'Spaghetti' years. Charming, sinister and ultimately tragic. Too many women for even Clint to handle.2. BREEZY ***An unlikely love affair between a freewheeling young hippy-ish girl and the obviously aging William Holden (not all that far from (at least psychological) cradle snatching). Clint directs but doesn't appear in this film.3 COOGAN'S BLUFF ***I've always been ambivalent about this movie. I sympathise with characters on both sides for contrasting reasons. Such is life. A couple of classic Clint scenes here. He obviously wins out in the end.4 THE EIGER SANCTON *****On the face of it, not an interesting plot. When I first saw this as a teenage movie fan I thought it was boring. The sub-plots are the nub.5 HIGH PLAINS DRIFTER *****I cannot rate this movie too highly. It's one of Clint's best five films. He appears to be a vengeful returning spirit intent on bringing a corrupt town to justice and sending it to hell.6 JOE KIDD ****An average to good Western. I wish I could award three-and-a-half stars. That's it.7 PLAY MISTY FOR ME ****Possibly the first 'stalker' movie. Clint is a cool and possibly too laid back California DJ who attracts a bunny-boiler fan. Romance, mind games, and ultimately violent mayhem ensue.8 TWO MULES FOR SISTER SARAH ****I'm torn between 4 and 5 stars for this one. Nearly all of Clint's best movies have him playing a cowboy of one sort or another (outlaw/lawman/supernatural being...) and this is no exception. Shirley Maclaine is perfectly cast as the nun/whore/criminal in his charge.
