How dark does the room have to be to see the effects?

The room doesn't have to really dark, it will just look better and brighter the darker it is. Also distance will play a part, the further away the projection is, although the projection will be bigger the brightness will be lower. Imagine standing up against a wall with a torch just a couple of centimetres away, you will have a very small but very bright circle of light. But the more you move back that circle will get bigger but less bright.

How does this differ from the Mathmos?

Bigger and more colourful, though more expensive; may be more robust but has a way to go to beat my Mathmos which at nearly 20 is only now showing signs of aging.
