BABYLON
F**K
One long and messed up movie…..
Babylon is another Chazelle and Hurwitz collaboration (La La Land, Whiplash). They were Harvard roommates. Hurwitz’s score is outstanding and deserves an Oscar. The musicians who played it have to be great. I have not heard trumpet playing at this level since Miles Davis. Screenplay is horrible. There are at least four main characters. Margot Robbins is great in the beginning but like the movie burns out Hal way through. Pitt is Pitt. Diego Calva is probably the best actor in the movie. Like Babylon the movie is really X rated. We get the point from the first scene how decadent Hollywood was at this time. By the end, they take it to even a lower level when you think there is no lower level. This has to be one very expensive film which few will make money. When the Soundtrack comes out in April, buy it. The movie is worth the three plus hour watch just to say you saw it. It is NOT best picture, director or screenplay material. Cinematography maybe. Editing, no. A lot of this film could have been cut especially towards the end and so much of it could of been much better. I think Pitt was not the best choice for this film. He is distracting by his poor acting and I realize some of it is intentional but most of it is him. So many other actors could have made this plot line shine. Three stars. Best seen of the big screen and Dolby Atmos or better. Hurwitz you are great - future John Williams at the very least.

It's what you would expect from a movie about Hollywood
How do I rate movies? 1. Was I entertained? 2. Did I waste my time? 3. Did I waste my money?Entertained: Yes, the movie got a little dark at the end - but the characters are based on real people, and the extravagance and decadence of Hollywood.Wasted time: No. The movie was a bit long though.Wasted Money: No, used Amazon Digital Credits from using "No rush Shipping", I think the movie was $3.99 (or you could say free with the credits). Would I pay out of pocket $3.99 for this? Probably. Would I pay for the movie in a movie theater - no. But sans a Star Wars or Top Gun movie that should be seen on the big screen with surround sound, there aren't many movies I would see in the movie theater.

Kinda weird
No spoilers but before watching even with mature teens check IMDB first. The opening orgy scene was not disturbing to me, but it was deemed too pornographic by the college kids. Perhaps because they were watching with a grown adult and that was uncomfortable? In any case, I actually found it to be a fairly good representation of the rise and fall of the silent movies, and the people that became stars because of them, and who stars fell to earth, when talkies and colored movies became a thing. Most people wouldn’t believe that the behavior represented by this film Existed, but I do recall hearing about how Vivian Leigh would drive around Hollywood with a male director friend and she would help him pick up male prostitutes in Hollywood. So yes, it was that wild in early movie land. I found the ending somewhat predictable and also a little too Rosebud, but… still didn’t mind the rental fee.

Don't quit too early...it took me two times to understand and love it.
I'm already kinda like that, stuff can get by me uncensored, uncritiqued, at least for myself. The first time I saw this film I was actually "double tasking" on another project (which i know isn't good to do, doesn't make me more 'efficient' despite my ignorance to think otherwise!), so I missed too many of the rapid-fire action scenes. I liked it overall when it ended but I just saw Babylon again today for the 2nd time...and I realize now much more about what I didn't catch the first time and how it plays out in the storyline. Silly rabbit, right?!What didn't I like about the movie? Only thing is that the story is huge with many important (and hilarious) characters who all weave in and around the other characters, and none too slowly. So you need to keep up, listen and watch well. The clips throughout are faster than fast, with a meaning to each that will have you cracking up and surprised by such fun. (The music, by the way, is absolutely perfect in my opinion.) So I just needed to watch well-enough in the first 15 minutes before I was up to speed, so to speak. Wasn't hard, but neglecting this aspect during my first viewing proved to be very dumb! There are way too many aspects to promote in most any 3 hour movie. My attempts would only take up your time. Suffice it to say, however, that Brad, Margo and Diego are simply Stellar in Babylon. Each role is pure perfection I believe, while their acting work is supported by an incredibly huge and talented cast. I bet you'll watch and enjoy all the acting without thinking about how long the movie is running (duh, dude: why'd you have to mention the length at all?!). There is SO much to fall over laughing for the slapstick lines and scenes, then watch intensely as the actors' lives on screen collapse for doing what each of us would have probably done during the time of silent film start-ups that lead to the growth and entry of "talkies".One final point, if I may, has to do with the final 15-minutes or so of the movie. This part is simply outstanding movie making at its very best. A High-Bar for others to follow and compare, to be sure. We see Diego, now as an older Hispanic man with a family, in a modern movie theater as he watches "Singing in the Rain." This pokes him to remember how fine his life and love were decades earlier, so much so that he weeps terribly over what we can all see with him. Memorable and tragic, yet there's that understated grin from Diego at the movie's end. It was as if he came to see a bigger perspective that was a bit better for him. I'm probaly reaching here, but it appeared to help him move forward past what had happened to him tragically and show how he could enjoy his waning years.I'm telling you folks that I don't write many reviews, mostly to give a gently push to seek out a movie or avoid one. This film is different. Babylon moved me to send out this message to everyone: watch it closely and enjoy it immensely. If you don't get it, watch it again. I guarantee you'll become a big fan if you love movies. If you don't, well, maybe something's wrong with you.No worries though, just go watch it again.Peace.
