Good film on a good disc
DC's animated output these days ranges from the good to the great and this is another solid piece that fits somewhere in the middle of that spectrum - not perfect but entertaining and certainly worth a look (with some fun Blu Ray extras). This one picks up roughly where we left the Dynamic Duo at the end of Son of Batman with Damien having a tough time settling in as Robin - finding himself frequently at odds with Bats and (in amusing fashion) Nightwing. Then The Court of Owls enter their world, a strange but interesting addition to Batman folklore in the New 52 Universe (in this case created by regular comic creative team Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo). This leads to a dark, relatively violent tale of assassins and shady underworld types where loyalties will be severely tested. Right from the opening prologue where we meet a disturbed psychopath and face his abuse of young children, the tone is set. Frequent bouts of bloody violence populate proceedings from there in engrossing fashion as the plot takes the odd little twist. The animation is as good as ever and the voice cast are solid at worst so it's all good fun.Jay Oliva is in the directors chair this time around with JM DeMatteis on scripting duties. This Blu Ray version has a fair few extras to pad out the package, including the usual dip into the DC animated archives and an unexpected classic treat.......-Feature commentary-The Mythic Court of Owls featurette-The Talons of the Owls featurette-Sneak peak at Justice League - Gods and Monsters-Batman The Animated Series - Old Wounds-Superman The Animated Series - Obsession-Young Justice - Auld Acquaintance-The Brave and The Bold - The Colour of Revenge-Super Rabbit (a vintage Bugs Bunny short)

The Court Of Owls
Batman learns that the mysterious Court Of Owls might have had something to do with his parent's deaths while Damian is approached by the assassin Talon setting him up onto a conflict with Batman. Following on from previous movie Son Of Batman, so it might help to have seen that first, this loosely adapts the Batman comic storyline The Court Of Owls and does a faithful job of it. Animation is decent with Jason O'Mara returning as the voice of Batman and establishing a continuity in the films. Again, this is an adults only film so once again don't go assuming that just because it has Batman and is a cartoon it'll be suitable for kids. This is a darker, more adult take on the character which looks to be setting the tone for future animated Batman movies. Some good action too while Jason O'Mara is turning into a decent Batman.

Just okay
Not as poor as I was expecting. While I agree that Batman was not his usual smart detective self (a lot of suspend-belief because he was very, very stupid at times) it was still watchable and action flowed well. I think that the comic is probably better (Court of Owls) than the movie. If it's Court of Owls you want, you probably aren't going to get what you want since this was only sorta linked in.More of a mashup of the graphic novels than a pure take, enter only if you have no expectations since the comic comparisons usually don't convert well to the animated movies.Comparable to Son of Batman and Under the Red Hood, both of which paint Batman/Bruce in a poor light, but worth a watch regardless.

Far better than last outing.
Far better than previous installment. Jay Oliva really understands pacing and action choreography. Takes liberties with the original storyline, but it makes it its own thing, and it works.*slight spoilers*Pleasant surprise at inclusion of Nightwing.
