Lacks focus and disappointing compared to the first Spider-Man Marvel Platinum.
(Small note) Other reviewed Marvel Platinums are: Hulk, Thor, Black Panther, Venom, Thanos, Avengers, Spider-Man, Spider-Man Reloaded, X-Men, Daredevil, Captain Marvel, Guardians of the Galaxy, Guardians of the Galaxy Reloaded, Deadpool and Wolverine. Check them out if you want. (End small note).Marvel Platinum the Definitive Spider-Man Reloaded collects Amazing Spider-Man Vol. 1 #2, 46, 248, 295, 593-594, Marvel Team-Up #63-64, Web of Spider-Man #33, Peter Parker, the Spectacular Spider-Man #133, and Amazing Spider-Man Vol. 2 #32-35 [473-476]. This is my eighth Marvel Platinum (Hulk, Thor, Black Panther, Venom, Thanos, Avengers and Spider-Man) and my first of the Reloaded selection of Marvel Platinums. I'll also say The Definitive Spider-Man was one of my favourite Marvel Platinums along with the Definitive Thanos but for different reasons, Thanos I liked for how well put together and focused it was and how it told larger stories, while Spider-Man I loved for being more human, showing conflict in Peters normal life and because of that it made the stories more impactful and made me genuinely feel and share emotions with characters as you read, it was magical and something that stuck with me. If you want more details on those reviews check them out. Now we are left with the question, is our beloved and one of the world's most favourite and iconic Marvel superheroes of all time done justice once again? Let's find out. From here on out I'll refer to Marvel Platinum as MP as it gets annoying typing Marvel Platinum out over and over again. I will also mention, this isn't a sequel to the first Spider-Man MP, just a selection of different stories. Before we dive in, as with any other MP we begin with the standard foreword giving slight overview of what's collected in the volume. (I'll be including a picture of)We begin with Amazing Spider-Man Vol 1. #2 (1963) written by Stan Lee and art from Steve Ditko. From the initial appearance of Spider-Man in Amazing Fantasy Vol. 1 #15 in August of 1962, he was given his own series which leads up to this issue. The choice of including the Vulture was chosen as this MP released shortly before Spider-Man: Homecoming. This issue is in two parts, the first is focused on the Vulture and the second part on the Terrible Tinkerer. Both issues were decent but I personally preferred the second. The Vulture is just a criminal trying to pull off heist and stealing from unsuspecting people I did however like how it shows the beginning of Parker's affiliation with J. Jonah Jameson. The second part was much more amusing in my opinion, where the Vulture seemed a typical criminal and cliché in his motives, the Tinkerer was more unique with a more interesting role and motive, I can't say much without spoiling it. I also think the ending was interesting showing that there may be others like Jameson or at least wonder about Spider-Man. Overall I enjoyed both.Amazing Spider-Man Vol. 1 #46 (1967) with Stan Lee writing and John Romita Sr. handling the artwork. Here we and Spider-Man are introduced to the Shocker, I believe his inclusion was due to his inclusion in the Spider-Man: Homecoming as well. In this issue Spider-Man encounters a foe who he has never battled the likes of and of all things, Spider-Man has an injured arm. This issue was interesting, although he's similar to the Vulture by wanting to rob banks and steal things, I felt the Shockers concept and powers were more interesting than the Vulture, who is an old guy who flies fast and silently. I feel because this issue wasn't shared like the last one was Stan was able to write more and give us more on the character compared to the Vulture, and it's appreciated. Peter also is trying to move in with Harry Osborn in this issue, overall I was entertained.Next up is Marvel Team-Up #63-64 (1977) written by Chris Claremont and art from John Byrne. I will admit, this is my Introduction to Danny Rand/Iron Fist, I'd not read any comics or seen the show on a popular streaming service. I must admit I did quite enjoy these issues, it was great getting to see Spider-Man team up with Iron Fist and learn more about this character who I knew hardly anything about. There's plenty of action and it has definitely intrigued me into looking more into Iron Fist. I also must say the artwork was very pleasing and I have always had respect for John Byrne and he doesn't disappoint here.Following that we have Amazing Spider-Man Vol. 1 #248 (1984). Written by Roger Stern and artwork by Ron Frenz. This was a touching issue, showing how big Spider-Man's heart is, in the middle of the night Spider-Man visits a huge fan and looks at this fans collection of Spider-Man memorabilia, as the story progresses we learn how Parker found this fan and why he has visited him. Overall it was a touching story and thought it was great however it's basically a retelling of Spider-Man.Next up we have a 3 part story consisting of Web Of Spider-Man #33 (1987), Amazing Spider-Man Vol. 1 #295 (1987) and Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man #133 (1987). All written by Ann Nocenti and penciling by Cyndy Martin. Personally, I wasn't really a fan of the story, I will admit it did pick up in the third part but that's expected since it's the conclusion. This is more of a psychologically provoking story I will mention. In a nutshell a mobsters wife is taken to a psychiatric hospital and eventually Spider-Man winds up a resident as well, under heavy influence of medications things seem to be distorting how he knows them while unable to escape. There are two perspectives going on in this story, the mobster and his family and Spider-Man. Overall it was ok but personally I would've preferred something else more gripping, although some may find it gripping and interesting it wasn't my cup of tea especially considering MP's only tend to throw in a few longer stories I feel something better could've been added instead. We move onto Amazing Spider-Man Vol. 2 #32-35 (#473-476) (2001), Written by J. Michael Straczynski and art by John Romita Jr. What can I say, this is a gem and I loved every second of it. Straczynski delivers a intriguing and we'll delivered concept with a more modern and comical Spider-Man that I'm familiar with and it was dearly missed as the web slinger in previous stories wasn't as witty and funny as he is here. It should be said that the artwork by Romita Jr. is well done and to my taste more than what has been previously presented. In this story, Parker is warned of an unstoppable threat that now pursues Spider-Man, enter Morlun, a new kind of foe Spider-Man has never fought the likes of. Morlun is unstoppable, he is mysterious, relentless, strong, and doesn't grow weak, this story even delivers a fantastic ending that I was upset I couldn't keep reading, I wanted more. This is truly an impressive addition to the collection and high recommendation, even if you opt out of buying this MP do yourself a favour and look into these issues, you'll be glad you did.Last up is Amazing Spider-Man Vol. 1 #593-594 (2009) with writing from Mark Said and art by Mike McKone and Barry Kitson helping on #594. In this issue Spider-Man learns of the presence of another Vulture going around and killing citizens, also in the story Peter learns of Mays relationship with Jameson Sr. Overall it was kinda disappointing. The villain felt like a copy and paste/cash in on a the classic Vulture but someone new, we don't get much detail on his origin or his motives, the fight sequence between them is kind of abrupt and short lived, the ending in how Spider-Man beats him in my opinion was a let down. The whole issue felt like a one off for the villain and on top of that this is the last volume. I also wasn't a fan of the ending either, where apparently everything is Norman Osborn's fault?......Overall unimpressed especially considering this was the issue to end the MP.The last few pages are some biographies and info on some of the baddies through the MP, like Vulture, Shocker and Morlun. Then we end on The true origin of the Vulture. So what are my thoughts about this MP coming from the last? Coming from the last Marvel comic I read which was the fantastic Spider-Man MP I had high hopes, it wasn't perfect but had a charm and the characters and issues selected were dripping with emotion and I came to this Reloaded with very high expectation and curiosity as I'd never jumped into the Reloaded MP's yet. I'll start with the good, the issues involving Shocker, Iron Fist, Morlun and I even liked the heart touching issue, but to be fair maybe the Shocker and Morlun issues are MP worthy but I did enjoy those. I also like that unlike the first Spider-Man MP, the last 20 pages or so sent biographies, it's maybe the last 5-6 which dedicates more pages to the comics themselves which I did appreciate. Now onto what I didn't like, and before I get into this I will say that I'm no expert on comics or the history of Spider-Man, I've been into comics maybe 8 months or so take my opinions as you will. To be honest, this is a massive let down for me, personally they should've put the Morlun issues in the first MP and perhaps not bothered with this one. There's no emotion like there was in the last MP, the jump from Amazing Fantasy Vol. 1 #15 (Spider-Man’s debut) to the death of Gwen Stacy hit us like a ton of bricks, and the inner conflict didn't stop there, Peter worried about his relationship with MJ, was looking at his past and future able to change the past and save Gwen Stacy which still haunts him and we understood that throughout the MP, then Peter sacrificing his marriage to save Aunt May. I personally think you'd be insane not to think highly of the first Spider-Man MP. Where as here, it just doesn't compare in really any way. It didn't feel like there was a focus or a motive in the MP like there was in the first, we were taken on an emotional rollercoaster and even though Peter wasn't perfect he always tried to do the right thing and the best he could, here…. It's just a mashup of various comics, nothing meshes well or compliments anything else, and coming from the last MP it shows. The way the MP ends infuriates me to no end, it ends with Peter realising Norman Osborn is to blame for everything….. in the last issue Norman played the absolute minimum role in the comic and he had absolutely no focus in the rest of the MP, it would've been an interesting ending if the issues throughout the MP had Norman pulling strings behind the curtain impacting Spider-Man and Parker only realising it at the end, it perhaps would've been better to end on the Morlun story since the ending was interesting, or better yet, replace the Doc Ock issues out of the last MP then it would've been absolutely fantastic. I don't think I'll be too bothered to dive into other Reloaded MP's because they aren't Spider-Man. He isn't your regular superhero, he isn't someone waiting for the next fight sequence he's human, living an everyday life, working, seeing family, paying bills and maintaining a relationship (when he can) this is what makes his stand out above the rest and why he's loved dearly by fans. I personally am worried but hopeful as I've seen an Amazon listing for Spider-Man MP Redux to be released in May. I'm hopeful that it will be an improvement from this but we shall see. If you are interested in this MP, go ahead and give it a go, I'm not trying to put you off however don't expect it to be as good as the first in my opinion. If you managed to stay this long credit to you and I really hope this massive review that has taken me ages has helped you.Hopefully you found this review helpful and happy reading.
