Journey to the Center of the Earth (Dover Thrift Editions)

I love the book and the movie too. But I like the movie more! Jules Verne rights amazing books and I'm planing on reading some more.

I read this book because my 9 year old Grandson recommended it. (He is also advising me on this review) If you do not already know, be aware that this is a classic science fiction/adventure story written by Jules Verne in 1864. One reason to read the book is that it provides a fast-paced adventure story, good enough to have been made into several movies, and exciting enough to hold the interest of a 9 year old, despite an advanced vocabulary and a writing style that is a quite flowery compared to what is usually written for young adults. Another reason to read it is to get an idea of the understanding of, and speculations about paleontology and geology that were current around the middle of the 19th century. The scientific discussions and arguments about the interior of the earth between Axel, the young narrator of the story, and his imperious professorial uncle, reflect actual scientific debates going on around that time. I was also interested to discover that the "Ruhmkorff" apparatus that the adventurers used to provide light underground was actually known at that time - an ingenious battery-operated predecessor of the fluorescent light. I had assumed it was simply something Verne devised to allow his plot to proceed- although I am skeptical that it would work for as long as it appeared to work in the book. Although this is not a book you would read to learn about geology, it might be useful in learning about the history of our understanding of geology and paleontology.

My favorite book of all time. Funny, and interesting. Cant believe I’ve never read Jules Verne Before.

I am making myself go through this, but find it really in the class with watching paint dry. The science is so outdated that it is agonizing. There are exciting moments, but you are all the way to chapter 30 before they get out of the tunnel. I am reading and listening to the Audiobook with Tim Curry as narrator. He does a fabulous job. The Main character whines a lot, but I have to say that I am totally in agreement with him most of the time. What the book captures is the human need for adventure and awe at the contemplation of the created world. And you have plenty of time for contemplation in the fifteen odd chapters you spend in a tunnel. The ending takes deus ex machina to new heights as well.

Verne never fails to bring forth my inner child, and rekindles my fascination with science and the nature of the world we live in. Simply famous!

The print in this book is very, very small very hard to read

I've wanted to read Journey To The Center of The Earth for quite a while now. Picked up the Dover Thrift addition, and I am very happy with it. Pretty cheap book, but only price wise. Besides the lower price, it's a great book. I really enjoyed the story, and how well it is written. I can now fully appreciate why this book is a classic.
