Found my dog wire break.
Worked good finding the break in my underground dog fence. Stuck a screwdriver in the ground and attached the ground clamp to it. Unplugged the dog fence and put the other clamp on one end of the fence wire. There is a learning curve but once you figure it out it works great. When following the wire there is a loud high pitch noise it makes. You can walk swinging the sensor in the air and it will be a strong sound. I found that past the break I could still find the wire but had to have the sensor on the ground to find it. So the point where you go from the strong noise just walking freely to where you have to put the sensor to the ground is the point of the break. When trying to first find the break I was going backwards dragging the sensor across the ground and tediously following the wire then all of a sudden the sound started blasting, so apparently I started in the wrong direction and just because it was broken that end of the wire will still have some signal. Once I figured out what I was listening for it is actually pretty easy to use. The directions are okay but you have to employ a little common sense too.

I had my doubts but IT WORKED.
I bought it to find a break in the dog fence wire. The key is to hook up the transmitter unit to only one wire. Connect both clamps to the same wire. One side of the loop will have the signal an the other will not. Follow the one that has the signal until it disappears and you found your break.Caveat. It probably will not be able to find the break in the section where the wire is twisted together.

Works but not five star works
Used this to find failed underground cable about 20" down. It works but it is a slow process. I had 300' of cable to trace so I rented a professional model for $50 a day that was a lot easier and faster. Still I ended up using this locator after returning the rented one when I needed to verify and pinpoint an exact location. I got use and value from this tool and kept it.

It works fairly well if you understand how to use it
I bought this to track plumbing under my basement floor in preparation to put in a basement bathroom. The way I believe its supposed to work is that if everything is set up just right, you will get a null in the sound when you are directly over the signal wire. In my case, I clipped onto a wire snake that I had inserted into the plumbing line. I did manage to find a null, but it really helped by knowing - to some extent - the general direction that the pipe was headed...What can really mess up your ability to find the null is the fact that the signal you are trying to trace is also being emitted by everything else in the area that is electrically connected to what you are trying to locate. In my case, it was the rest of the steel snake wire that was still laying on the basement floor. Once I took care of that extra wire, then the null was a bit easier to find. One thing that makes a big difference when trying to find a null is to not hold onto the receiver unit directly. Tape a non metallic handle to it (anything plastic) and then hold onto the plastic handle while slowly moving it around the area. The unit does work, but don't expect miracles. For the price, I think it did a pretty good job.

Not working right at all
Bought this wanting to trace some utility waterline with the wire locator hooked to the tracer wire . The locator picked up everything I tried turning the output down but still did not help This will work for a wire that’s 2 inches in the ground but any deeper I wouldn’t attempt to use it .

Works!
I used it to locate a break in my dog fence wire loop. It was indespensible. It was not a clear night & day indication, so it took some time but in the end I located the break at the first suspected location. Worth noting, despite what the instructions suggest not to do, I used it on heavy stranded wire and grounded the black lead to a water pipe.

This worked AWESOME!!!!
It does actually work. I was crawling on hands and knees trying to find break in underground pet fence for hours. I got this, found the break in less than 5 minutes. So easy! Bless who ever thought of this!

Didn't work for invisible fence
We bought the TUIREL Underground Wire Locator even though reviews were mixed about it working to find dog invisible fence breaks. While it found the wire very well, the signal kept dropping out everywhere and we knew the whole fence wasn't compromised. Also, while it did find the wire the tone continued to sound for an area of about a foot wide. We gave it a two star rating because it would find a fairly approximate location of the wire and because it appears to be a nice unit which included a pouch to keep everything together. We did return it immediately after discovering it wouldn't work for us.
