Q: These did not work, had to loosen both to let air out as it did not auto bleed, then tighten to stop water leaking. What did I do wrong?

My auto-bleed valve did not work - I had to bleed the radiator manually so something is not right here ! Plenty of air was released when manually loosening the nut. So much for the extravagant claims by the manufacturer.

Q: Do they allow auto draining if the system needs to be drained

Yes, if the system is cold , but it is much easier if just a single radiator is to be removed to slacken the auto-vent assembly a small amount.

Q: Do I replace the bleed valve with these or the blanks so that if they don't work I can still bleed it manually?

Replace the bleed valve. The automatic valves can be bled manually if required.
