This excellent CD combines two 1958 PRESTIGE albums(both given 5 stars by Down Beat magazine) featuring the great saxophonist John Coltrane(1926-67).Tracks 1-5('Kenny Burrell & John Coltrane') were recorded in Hackensack, New Jersey on March 7, 1958 with John Coltrane(tenor sax); Kenny Burrell(guitar); Tommy Flanagan(piano); Paul Chambers(bass) & Jimmy Cobb(drums).Tracks 6-10('Soultrane') were recorded in Hackensack, New Jersey on February 7, 1958 with John Coltrane(tenor sax); Red Garland(piano); Paul Chambers(bass) & Art Taylor(drums).Coltrane is in superb form on these quintet and quartet sessions with supportive rhythm sections and highlights include a wonderful duet with Kenny Burrell on 'Why Was I Born?' and a lengthy, heartfelt quartet version of 'I Want To Talk About You'.This 77-minute CD contains two of the finest PRESTIGE sessions with John Coltrane and deserves a place in any modern jazz collection.
