Beasts Made of Night

This could have been a great book, but the author fails at plotting. So many things happen for now reason at all and then are just forgotten, killing the tension in the story dead in its infancy. The author is too fascinated with his world and spends too much time explaining it away instead of giving his character a story. It's all over the place. Perhaps the next book will be better... Such a waste, damn it!

The writing was fine, but the world building, plotting, stakes, characters all lacked something essential to keep the book engaging. I seldom cared about the issues and challenges the characters faced.

Why must books leave you endings that feel like you’ve been tossed off a cliff? It’s a cliffhanger... It’s very detailed and yet very little in the world is actually explained,they act as if math and magic work together to conjure these sin-beast but no math I know works that way. The characters were engaging but some decisions the MC made didn’t make sense. I guess it was just okay for me, average fantasy and I just couldn’t get into the story.

So this was 100% a cover buy. That being said I really enjoyed this book. This book deals with the mythology of sin eaters and I found it incredibly interesting. This idea that somebody could take on other peoples sins so that they remain pure. Of course this comes at a price and only the rich can afford to remain 'pure'. Highly recommend!!

Onyebuchi's debut novel is a DREAM.The world he's created must come from some magical depths of his psyche. The concept is pure genius and our hero, Taj, is immediately lovable. Truly a page turner for me and couldn't wait to keep picking it up to finish, only to realize by the very, very end that there will be a sequel. Never saw it coming. HALLELUJAH!

Love, love, love this book. I can't write paragraphs, and I don't want to give away any spoilers. I will say that this book is truly magical. I love Taj and his growth. Just wish this book had like 300 more pages :(

I loved the characters and the world created in this book. I found it completely engaging and totally unpredictable.

Interesting world. Ends in a bit of a cliffhanger, which is a bit of a shame. There are some aspects that struck me as a little rushed, and there are some aspects of the world that are somewhat unclear when they shouldn't be.

I could not stop reading this story. Thoroughly enjoyed it. My only issue really is that it ended just as I was getting fully invested. Is there more?
