K&F CONCEPT 3-Way Geared Tripod Head

I really am enjoying using the tripod head for architectural photography. Using it makes aligning my verticals and horizontals significantly accurate and I spend less time in Photoshop fixing my perspectives. It also makes on-axis shots easier. The levels on my Canon make this head easy to use. The gears are in a natural and intuitive placement. After a while of use, my hands know where to find the knobs. The fast release dials make it easy to get a rough adjustment then you use the fine tuning knobs get a precision adjustment. It is at least two pounds lighter than my Manfrotto Pan-Tilt head. I didn't think I cared too much about weight until things got a lot lighter. The build quality seems solid and durable, but light. I have it pared with a K&F carbon fiber tripod and the combo is light, sturdy, and easy to carry. I take multiple exposures and merge them together and I've notices less movement between shots when the images are aligned in Photoshop, even when I need to touch my camera to make adjustments. The only thing I didn't like is the Arca-Swiss mount is rather useless. I purchased a 3 Legged Thing mount to replace the one that comes with the unit. It does not have enough grip to secure a heavier camera. In horizontal mode the camera drifts down quite easily making it useless and possibly dangerous to use. I highly recommend getting a better tripod plate. This tripod is for precision movements and locking things down. It is not well suited for video or where you don't need precision or panning. For that you would want a pan-tilt tripod head. It is suited for architecture and macro photography where you want more accurate adjustments. This head is probably the best geared head under $500 that I was able to find.

This product is very well built and should last forever. The gears are smooth although they do require more effort to turn than I would have expected. This is probably due to the fact that the spring that allows the user to override the gear is very strong. Mine arrived with a defect in the plate that holds the camera. When I turned the screw to loosen the plate, it stuck. I hoped that tightening and loosening it and forcing it open with my hands would fix it, but it didn't. I applied WD40 but that didn't help. Finally, I contacted customer service via their website. I received a response within a few hours asking me to provide them with my order number and to supply a video that illustrated the problem. I created a video with my phone, uploaded it to Dropbox and sent the link to customer service. I promptly received a message that the product was defective and that they would send me a new one. The company is located in China and it took about 3 weeks for the new one to arrive. I've checked it over thoroughly and it functions as expected. This was outstanding no-hassle customer service. I'm happy to recommend K&FConcepts for the quality of the product and the customer service.

I broke 3 of these before I realized I was the problem. K&F’s customer service is beyond reproach and they replaced each one I broke with no questions asked. The gears are not steel, and if you rough handle gear like I used to (casually tossing the tripod with head into the back of the SUV), you’ll strip the gears on short order. I will never not have a 3 way geared head again. They just offer an incredible amount of precision to use anything else, the K&F geared head has a respectable price tag.

Originally I loved this gear head as it was originally easy to use, compatible with my arca-swiss plates, and operated buttery smooth. And I'll be a little vain - loved the color combo with my smallrig plate. However after only a week I started to notice that after adjusting to my desired angle (real estate and events, so no extreme angling here), the side to side action was getting looser and looser to the point that the weight of my camera (Nikon Z8 + FTZ II + Tamron 15-30mm 2.8f G2) would be too much for the head and it would list to the side instead of solidly holding level. No way to tighten or correct it, and I ended up having to hold up the camera while on the geared head to keep it level. Kinda defeats the purpose. The knob for the forwards and backwards tilt also became hard to twist and I had to fight it just to allow me to tilt my camera to level it with the scene. When removing camera gear, knobs twisted smoothly when testing, but definite side to side wobble. I reached out to K+F with the video showing the listing from side to side - but before they could get back at me, the tension knob holding my arca-swiss plate released while on a shoot and next thing I see is my gear tumbling towards the ground and breaking apart like my heart. For reference the K+F gear head is mounted on a Manfrotto 190xpro tripod (built like a freakin tank). So far the FTZ converter is completely toast and the repair shop is assessing the damage on the camera body and lens. Currently talking to K+F but have low hopes. They keep telling me they want "real photos" and they want detailed photos, which is a bit hard to do when you yourself are in shock, calming down you AND the client, making plans b c and d, rescheduling all the shoots for the rest of the day, and running to the nearest camera store to see if any of your gear survived. To add insult to injury to a no good terrible day, some guy at the camera store ignored the visual evidence (was literally carrying my tripod + head) took it on himself to mansplain in great detail how a 3-way gear head worked, that he never heard of gear heads failing, and Oh and I didn't need a 3-way head if all I was doing was taking pretty pictures with a small camera, and hadn't I considered a ball head instead? Moral(s) of the story: - Benro makes a similar 3-way gear head that locks(!!) your plate in place. Even if the tension knob is loose, your gear only slides forwards and backwards on the rail instead of up and out like the K+F version. Color combo is black and blue, but better the gear head than your heart - despite the temptation, don't take out mansplainers with your tripod - camera insurance camera insurance camera insurance - invest in backup camera gear, trust me it'll save your bacon and makes terrible no good days less stressful Good luck!

When I first received this geared head tripod mount, I was amazed at how solid it felt and how easy it was to begin using it. There is a small learning curve when it comes to remembering which knob controls which axis, but after that it's simple. The only notable down side of this head is its size, and specifically related to travel. The solution I've come up with is to remove it from the tripod and then wrap it with socks and then some clothing, but it does consume significant volume... Why the three stars? Well, in the 18 months I've owned it, it's actually had very light use. I've used it a handful of times for architectural shoots, and twice for night sky work. That's why I was completely dumbfounded when the knob that controls the forward/backward pitch (up/down) stopped working - and then actually unscrewed. For a bit, I could use the macro adjuster to free move the axis so my camera was level, but then the locking function stopped working and it was near impossible to work. I called their customer support number this morning, pleasantly a human answered the line without endless voice prompts of pressing one number or another. After collecting some of my information and learning of the issue, he asked me to take a video of the issue and send it in to them. I'll keep this review updated with the status of the issue.

Most outstanding 3-axis geared head. Fully aluminum, including the knobs. There is zero play, you cannot budge your camera's position with force. Motion is dampened, so you won't fly past the target. Even when disengaging a gear for a huge axis swing, the camera will not move without applying pressure. Very fine control and huge axis articulation. The weight capacity is awesome, it permits me to mount my camera with a heavy teleconverter to a rod rig to support the lens, with a huge ARRI dovetail. No worries about excess wear on the gears. To obtain more than 5° of positive tilt, you will need to mount it to a ball head if using a video head or an extra wide camera head on your tripod. Of course, you can tilt the head, but for astrophotography you'll want to set the head to level so you can use the elevation markers to hone in on targets.

I use this for my smart telescope SeaStar 50. Use this on a tripod as well as on a wooden board depending on the use case situation. Pros: very easy to install (just screw it), the three axes adjustment is extremely useful; the control and dial for each axis tilt is very intuitive; on winter I routinely use it outdoor in below freezing temperatures in Michigan for overnight observation sessions - it held up well for couple of years now. Cons: one of the axes teeth slipped once - o need to watch if that happens again. I have one star less that perfect due to that.

Great for real estate hdr photography. Allows you to align walls easily. Great feel and quality build. Easily installs onto tripod.

I bought this geared tripod head specifically for my DwarfLab Dwarf 3 smart telescope, and it's been an excellent upgrade. Unlike a conventional ball head, it allows you to make small, precise adjustments without the whole setup flopping out of position, which is exactly what I wanted. The geared controls are smooth and easy to use, making it simple to fine-tune the telescope's position. When you're trying to frame a particular part of the sky or make small corrections, being able to adjust one axis at a time is much more controlled than loosening a ball head and trying to reposition everything at once. Build quality has impressed me. It feels solid, the controls have a reassuringly positive feel, and once everything is locked in place it stays exactly where you put it. Although I bought it for astrophotography, I can also see it being very useful for landscape photography, macro work or any situation where accurate composition is more important than making rapid adjustments. The quick-release plate is convenient, and the whole head feels like a quality piece of equipment without costing the sort of money normally associated with professional geared heads. If you use a Dwarf 3, or any equipment where precise positioning matters, I'd definitely recommend taking a look at this. It gives you much finer control than a standard ball head and has made setting up my telescope quicker, easier and much more accurate.

Great service from Double O1. Omar provided amazing support when I needed to claim the warranty after having an issue with the item a few months after purchase. Item was replaced the same day. Highly recommended. Regarding the K&F geared head, its an amazing tool and great value for money. If you do any photography that requires precise adjustments this is a must replacement for a standard ballhead.
