Beetlejuice [Blu-ray] [1988]

I love this film ! A long time favourite along with some other well known horror comedy flicks! Despite the 4K having identical extras to the blu ray the rest is a complete overhaul! I'll start with the Atmos effects which add more depth over the DTS surround. Echoes and additional voice at beight add to the scale of scenes and it is a lot of fun. The fly scene will genuinely have you looking over your shoulders and around the room! The next welcome upgrade is grain , it's there but now fine grain allowing the films details to really become noticeable! The biggest upgrade is colour palette, things look so much more nicer! Skin tones no longer look orange pink , while the films wider colour and deeper blacks really add contrast to the picture Colours overall look vibrant and tonal changes along with textures in clothing are much more noticeable. The warm glows on faces during certain scenes adds focus on the character and the film no longer has that slight fuzzy over saturated at times look it had before. The HDR effects are subtle but you notice it when it's needed most and it all adds to what I feel is a worthy upgrade over blu ray! On a side note , adding Dolby vision wouldn't effect this film greatly due to it's fairly dark interior shots as most of the film takes place indoors and as mentioned the new colour grading suits this movie perfectly!

Beetlejuice is one of Tim Burtons finest movies and still holds up over 30 years later, Funny and likable characters such as Adam and Barbara Maitland, Lydia Deetz and Beetlejuice himself. The stop-motion in this film is impressive by 1988's standards. Especially for the snake and sandworm. Great visuals, great script, great music and in 4K it looks stunning, packed also with special features it’s a must buy for any physical media collector and a bargain at just £20

The included Blu Ray is the same as previous versions so disappointingly there is nothing new there. This review is only for the 4K UHD. Picture quality varies from quite soft to startlingly detailed. The film still manages to have a consistent feel though, so I am guessing the softer shots stem from the original source material. Apart from the sometimes soft and sometimes pin sharp images the majority of the film still has a big improvement over the Blu Ray. This I find is where 4K shines...films you think you know well suddenly show you a huge amount of detail that you weren't aware of before and the experience is the richer for it. The colours throughout are also richer. There isn't anything jaw dropping but colours in general are more vibrant when they need to be and have a much wider range when displaying the subtler colours. Occasional bursts of colour really stand out (especially the afterlife sequences). As with the image...the colouring somehow feels more consistent, and looks lovely. The vastly improved image and colour does make some of the effects look...less good than you remember them...but you are more than compensated for that by the richer textures, enhanced details and gorgeously done colour throughout. Grain seemed minimal but still very film like. It's not a reference quality disc but neither will you be disappointed. Well worth seeing and if you're a fan you will want it. Shame about the included Blu Ray though.

A childless couple (Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin) living in big old house have an car accident whilst returning from the village store only discover they are dead! The house is sold to a couple and there "gothic" daughter (Winona Ryder). The now deceased couple want to scare out the new arrivals but nothing is ever that easy, so they call upon a Bio-Exorcist Beetlegeuse (Michael Keaton)But the ghost with the most is maybe a step too far! The Film is good fun and the surreal horror angle is delivered with a typical twisted Tim Burton style. The quality of the blu ray although not on a par with the latest and greatest releases is nevertheless pretty good. It shows no signs of artefacts and Gives an overall improvement in the film, leaving this blu ray as the best version of the film currently available. The Audio Track has had the HD multichannel treatment. There is a distinct lack of extras, not as poor as other some blu ray releases but just a few episodes from the cartoon series the film spawned. The Age of the film means that the Computer Generated Images we have become so used to aren't here but there is a fond nostalgia in me for the Latex special effects and stop animation techniques used. All in all a fun filled 90 minutes and delivered at a good price

Great funny movie. It’s been a long time since I saw it but remembered I really liked it so decided to add the Blu-ray to my collection.
