Q: What makes this a women-specific design? In terms of fit, how is this different from the unisex Ozone 24? And does it make that much of a difference?

It's not overwhelmingly big which I always have a concern. Since unisex is to cover the average size of females and males, it runs larger than the women's. I needed something to balance my 5'3 frame. I'm short but Coca Cola bottle shaped and this back pack suits me well. So I would compare the dimensions with the body that it is meant for and go from there. I hope this helps.

Yes, it will definitely hold a binder that size plus several textbooks. There are three large compartments, each of which could hold a large binder and multiple textbooks. In addition, there are four zippered inner pockets: one large and three medium. The front large section has three vertical mesh compartments along the inside that are open at the top, so you could carry things like gum, a cell phone, driver's licence etc., and further down, three smaller compartments and one of the medium-sized zippered pockets.The middle large compartment has a medium-sized zippered pocket and an open-at-the-top pouch that goes all the way to the bottom and which could also act as a vertical divider.The back large compartment has a large zippered pocket that goes right to the bottom of the bag. I think this is to put a water bladder if you are biking or jogging, but it could be used for other things.On the outside of the bag, there is a side pocket on each side, large enough to hold a large water bottle or good-sized Thermos. There are adjustable straps at the sides of the backpack to snug it in tighter, the shoulder straps are adjustable, there is an adjustable chest strap and waist strap, straps to hook through your water bottle or Thermos so it doesn't fall out of its pocket, a built-in whistle, and a front handle and another at the top. The back is padded so your books or other things you carry don't press into you and cause pain.It really is a great, useful, sturdy backpack and the more I use it, the more I discover things about it that I like. I fully recommend it-you can't go wrong with this one!

The pack can hold a 1.5 liter and is very well engineered.

Q: Does this have a water bottle pocket on each side?

Yes, it does have a pocket for a water bottle on each side, and what's nice is that there is also a strap with a snap-shut closure on it, so if your water bottle has a loop or ring on it, you can securely strap your water bottle right into the pocket.
