Typically Old Timer, grade A
I have a warm spot for Old Timer Knives. I remember riding my banana seat bicycle to the mom and pop hardware store to drool on them when I was a kid. I bought my first fixed blade knife, an Old Timer, in 1975. (by then the bike was replaced by a 66 Ford). Over the years I have purchased the occasional Old Timer and have a dozen or so, some older USA made, some newer Chinese made. The quality seems to have stayed high and the current Old Timers seem to be a good solid value. I'm a huge fan of the "saw cut" Derlin handles with the inset badge and brass rivits. To be honest the only reason I bought the Lil' Finger is because it was the last Old Timer with a Derlin handle I didn't have. I'm glad I did though! This is a great little knife! Fit and finish are excellent. The Derlin handle is typical Old Timer and looks and feels great. All the metal surfaces are highly polished, heck I can even see some old guy looking at me in the finger guard. I can't see anything that could be improved upon except for the blade steel used. Old Timer uses 7Cr17MoV a Chinese stainless which is supposed to be an improvement upon American 440C. Well it's not and it certainly won't win any awards for edge retention. It sharpens easily to a razor edge though. The corrosion resistance and toughness are good with this steel. The blade is too small to securely clamp up in my edge testing machine but I cut on aluminum, copper, and bronze bar stock manually and I saw dulling but no chipping or edge rolling. Hardness tested at 56 HRC. Sharpening out the dullness caused by testing was easily and quickly done. The included leather sheath is nice. The leather is of a good quality and the right thickness for a sheath this size. The stitching is tight and uniform. The dark brown color is nice and the stamped in logo looks good. If it was available I would buy sheaths like this one for some of my other small knives. Overall I am very happy with this knife. Old Timer's Chinese made knives are darn nice for the money. I wish they would expand their Derlin handle line so I could buy more. My only complaint is I wish Old Timer would get away from the cheap steel. There are other Chinese made knives like Mossy Oak and FLISSA that are in the same price range with 14C28N and D2 blades. Grumpy old guy seal of approval though, I love this little knife!

Nice, compact, sharp, versatile, but handles are plastic.
Nice and sharp out of the box. The compact size is comfortable both with your finger behind the guard, and when in the choil. It's advertised as a skinning knife, but I've enjoyed using it for whittling and other small, delicate tasks, due to how much you can choke up on the blade. The leather sheath is good, and a nice inclusion. My only major complaint is due to a bit of confused/false advertising. The handles are listed as wood in the item details, but I had my doubts when looking at them in the photos. I had assumed they may be sawcut bone or antler (listed as "sawcut" in the item listing), but it's neither wood, bone, nor antler. They are plastic/resin. The only positive for this is that I won't have to worry about getting them dirty or wet. That being said, the "sawcut" pattern, does improve the grip well. I also wish there was some jimping to further improve the grip. All in all, good for the money with lots of versatility.
