The Arena

I purchased this film on DVD even though I had read bad reviews of it, I was very surprised! I had none of the audio, nor visual problems, and had a very crisp and clear picture. I even tested it on a high definition TV, with outstanding clarity. I have never seen the original version shot in the 70's, but I intend to. First, Karen McDougal and Lisa Dergan both give fine performances for first time acting stints. the cinematography was well executed, and the film well paced, along with other fine acting of the foreign actors. The McDougal/ Dergan commentary/ interview is very nice and insiteful. Version reviewed is presented in widescreen format. I disagree with the other reviewer's view on the nudity, it was not gratutitous, nor degrading, and fell in line with the story. Yes, there is some nudity, but to give a negative review just because there is not ENOUGH nudity is too harsh. I give a thumbs up for "The Arena", and highly recommend this film for those who enjoyed "Amazon's and Gladiator's" a superior film of the same time period. Amazon.com ships very quickly, and safely, with excellent pricing!

Didn't feel either bad or good about this flick. The acting was okay but not award winning. The fighting was rather lame--choreography was hokey. In one scene a fallen "barbarian" grabs the leg of a Roman horse as it charges past tripping it--at least Conan used a sword. The producers loved their rape scenes. I really doubt if two gladiators triggered the events that led to the fall of Rome. Not a bad way to kill some time; but not a good way either.

I like movies that have fighting, a lot a different things to go to gather to make it a movie worth watching.

I wish these 2 playmates would have done more movies

this movie is not a deep movie it tries to be deep in there storyline but it bombs it is not bad but it is not very good

THE CD WOULD NOT PLAY AT ALL, DISAPOINTMENT TO THE GUYS BUT GOOD FOR ME...LOL

"The Arena" revolves around 2 points: (1) a pyschopathic Roman governor in the northern Barbarian hinterlands who is obsessed with gladiator battles, and (2) two absolutely beautiful but talentless former Playboy Playmates who play slave girls molded into female gladiators. That about sums it up. The movie really brings home that depravity of the Roman empire and the complete and total lack of value of human life in that era. For that reason, it's worth watching once. The violence is graphic perhaps by necessity, given the subject matter, but it seems that the subject matter was chosen to showcase the violence for a target audience. The movie appears to have been filmed in a Slavic language and overdubbed in English (except for the Playmates, who speak in their native English). Don't buy this movie for the Playmates.

Nun, wo fange ich an? Dieser Film ist so schlecht, daß jeder, der Gladiator kennt, durch Ansehen visuell gefoltert wird. Vom Aufwand her knapp unter einer Xena-Folge anzusiedeln, rennen immerhin hier und da fünf bis zehn Legionäre durchs Bild.Die Provinzhauptstadt besteht aus einer kleinen, hölzernen Arena und einem kleinen Triumphbogen - das wars. Und, da wir gerade bei hölzern sind: Genau das trifft auch auf die Darsteller zu, ungefähres Big-Brother-Niveau. Die Kämpfe bewegen sich im Rahmen dessen, was ich mit ca. 1,5 Promille noch besser hinbekomme. Einzige Lichtblicke sind (na, logisch) ein paar ansehnliche Sklavinnen, hier und da teilweise nackt zu sehen. Aber damit hat sichs. Immerhin hab ich mit ein paar Bier selten so gelacht, weil der Film einfach SCHLECHT ist.Kurz: Dieser Film ist wirklich Trash. Wer mehr erwartet, Finger weg.

Zu recht regen sich viele auf, wie stümperhaft billig und amateurhaft dieser Film ist. Das ist wahrlich kein "Gladiator".Realistisch betrachtet muss man jedoch sagen, daß auch die damalige Zeit alles andere als eine perfekte Hollywood-Inszenierung war.Unsere Vorfahren haben sich sicherlich eher so ungeschickt angestellt, wie die Leute in diesem Film als wie Hollywoods-Top-Darsteller.Es waren eben die Arenen der Provinz nur billig Holzbühnen. In den Wäldern Germaniens stand kein Coloseum.Es ist natürlich für den Zuschauer nicht gerade berauschend zu sehen, wie die Leute in "The Arena" mit zu großen Helmen, schlechter sitzender Kleidung und amateurhaften Bewegungen herum-aggieren. Kein filmischer Genuß.Was es minutenlang zur Qual werden läßt, ist die grauenvoll schlechte Kamera- und Schnittarbeit während fast aller Actionszenen. Man geht extrem nah an die Gesichter, wohl um den billigen Hintergrund nicht zu sehr ins Bild zu bekommen. Man ruckelt und wackelt, schneidet hektisch und vermiest dem Zuschauer jede Übersicht.Das ist besonders schade, weil die blutigen Kämpfe das einzig Sehenswerte an diesem einfachen und eigentlich gar nicht unrealistischen Streifen sind. Der Oberschurke spielt schlecht. Da sind sogar noch die Playboyhäschen als Gladiatorinnen besser. Aber auch deren Nackszenen werden Kameratechnisch gründlich verdorben (z.B. Zeitlupen-Massenvergewaltigung).Für mich als Historien-Allesseher streckenweise lohnend, aber insgesamt ein Film, der sich selbst ein Bein stellt, da er durch Kaschierungsversuche mehr verdirbt als zu retten.

Ce film ne présente un intérêt que pour les collectiioneurs de Peplum; Le film est consternant mais son édition était attendue des amateurs d'antiquité au cinéma.
