Pitt Saves the British Empire.
A great read. Once again Anne Perry knocks it out of the park. The Inner Circle is back at it old tricks and to defeat Inspector Wetron, a member of the Inner Circle, Pitt is disposed to enlist the aid of his old enemy Sir Charles Voisey to defeat the terrorists and the brutality of a misguided group of idealists and stop the frantic rush of Parliament to pass a bill that will severely curtail civil liberities. As usual Charlotte and her great Aunt, Lady Vespasia Cumming-Could are Pitt's allies, as Pitt strives to save the British Empire from disaster.

It is the 15th book in a series set in Victorian times following Detective Thomas Pitt. I was give book nine in the series and liked it to much that I have been buying every book in order from one, a couple of month. Now up to 16 in the series, it follows the Pitt family so well it leaves the reader feeling as if they not only know Pitt but his wife, children, sister-in-law and aunt. etc. After reading 16 of these books in the series, I feel like I know that family.

more murder
My goodness, so many headless bodies. Continues progression of the regular characters. Can't say I was really surprised by the solution but it held my interest. And again, it just suddenly stops.

Truly a worthwhile purchase.
The received book was as stated " Better than good" and it was!The book spine showed no apparent over-flexing and its outer edges only slightly worn. This was an excellent purchase and the vendor/former owner demonstrated excellent care.

Excellant Mystery with a Goofy Ending
This is my 14th Pitt novel, and until the last 50 pages it was definitely a 5 star. Charlotte was present during the entire book, butshe was not involved in the investigation until the later stages. Her involvement at that point becomes unrealistic and silly. For the first time, Charlotte does do some soul searching as to how her actions does effect Pitt which adds to the depth of the relationship. The side story with Catherine is unrealistic, tedious and unwarranted. Remember a few books ago she felt it was fine that Pitt go to the gallows and that was what Charlotte would get for marrying below her station. Would Charlotte be so forgiving?I also fine Emily unlikeable. Thus only 4 stars

Are the fears of Whitechapel returning?
Anne Perry has again launched us oto the Victorian streets, along with the sound of hoove and heartbeats, speeding carriages in cobble stone streets - arrives another murder to terrorize Londoners across the city. Newly promoted Thomas Pitt finds himself thrown into the mire along with his own low confidence and still being on the outside edge of the world in which he is so lacking in grace and yet so knowledgeable. He daily confronts these feeling of being under valued and even resentment as to his lack of social skills and up bringing. Anne Perry paints a visual backdrop of life in these times and never relents on building the tension of the moment which will rise and fall like being a tightrope walker in the wind. You find yourself sometimes off balance by the characterizations where one moment you are feeling you are in the know; only to turn a page and that person is dead. I really love the plotting Anne Perry uses and the research she threads through the narrative.
