Tom Jones (Wordsworth Classics)

The Wentworth edition is very good so no need to pay more. Tom Jones is so well plotted that it rivals Oedipus Rex and Volpone in that respect. A great summer read or just great at anytime. A masterpiece.

This novel is really a surprise. It is long at over 700 pages, and I am only 120 pages in, but it is a really good read. It has humour, deals with issues such as children born outside of marraiage, relegion etc., and contains many thought provoking statements. Given that it was first published in 1749 it is an amazingly forward thinking piece of writing, and if it continues in the current vain will become one of my all time favourites.

Bought the paperback as had been reading ebook and wanted to be able to refer back to previous bits read more easily to help me follow the plot, but the print is so tiny (as it is such a very long book) that I think I'll continue reading the book instead where I can make the print much bigger!

I first read this book about seventy years ago and was fascinated. Reading it again after all that time increased its fascination for me because I understand it better now.

3 stars because it's too long and the old language is hard to read but it is a good story if you have the time and patience which i did not have

I found this very enjoyable and was frequently brought to laughter. Wickedly funny, slapstick, entertainingly told, with plenty of sharp/witty observations on human nature.

The book is worth reading... It's a comic epic as described by Fielding... Throughout the volume Fielding preaches the Shaftesbury philosophy making Sophia the heroine of d novel it's manifestation... Tom Jones is also unique because it's a quaisy picaeeque... And it is even considered by ST Coleridge to be the one of the three best plot the other two being Alchemist and King Oepidus... The plot resembles the paladian mansion. It shows the entire contemporary society of the 18th century... As it's subtitle The History of a Foundling...proves it to be a reflection of the societal condition of 18th century... Wordwoth classic publication of Tom Jones is better than most other and also pocket-friendly...and Amazon service was like a cherry on the cake...
