J. Pierpont Morgan’s Library: Building a Bookman's Paradise

Wealth in books
Since 1906, the Morgan Library at Madison Avenue and East 36th Street has been a home for much of its founding collector’s belongings. Since 1924 — a century ago this year — the institution has been open to the public, and it includes holdings originally in Morgan’s London home. A 2023 book worthy of any coffee table celebrates the small complex of buildings that make up the Morgan with its individual rooms containing worlds. It marks a 2022 restoration of the exterior, with essays on the genesis of Morgan’s bibliophilia, “the architecture of erudition,” and how Morgan and his son fought for the cultural identity of a neighborhood as the home for the incalculable beauty they now shared with nearly 300,000 visitors each year.—Richard Mammana, Medium
