Great backup drive!
Connected to Router so all devices on network can seamlessly access the drive. Software allows all camera photos to instantly backup on the drive. Easy to organize docs and photos. A great time saver.

Amazing home Network Access Storage!
Let me start off by saying I am a networking expert. I have included an image of my home layout to show what I’m talking about. A little back story. The other day I was messing around with my Western Digital MyCloudEx2Ultra (now know as NAS1), I was trying to change from Raid to JBOD. I did this with breaking the cardinal rule of not having a bakup. All of a sudden it looked like it was going to clear all data from the NAS1, I panicked and immediately pulled the plug! Many of you would know my instant panic! I was hyperventilating, my heart was racing, and all I was thinking was that I lost 4TB of data!So after plugging in the NAS1, I found that all was well. That got me thinking I need to cover my butt. I bought a 4TB 3.5” drive and tried to use it in a USB solution. No joy. Then I went online to Amazon and was shopping for a new NAS for bakup. I settled on the Synology 1 bay diskless version as I had a drive already. The drive arrived in just 2 days. After some consternation, I was able to open the cover of NAS2, and inserting the drive and securing it with the supplied screws. My biggest complaint with this enclosure is that I was unable to secure the cover completely. It just would not fit back together as it uses plastic pins to fit back in the holes and it just would not go back in. So fine. After hooking up the Ethernet cable and power, I turned it on. Compared to the NAS1 web interface, NAS2 interface was amazing. Very fresh look, and after a bit to figure out making a couple of shared folders, was up and running in about 30 minutes. The drive wanted to update firmware which took about 15 minutes. After about 2 days I have a complete backup of my data. I have also disconnected the NAS1, put it away for safe keeping in a fire safe box. I now use the Synology (NAS2) as my primary network disk device. The reason I went with the NAS2, is it has a power button! And also, I can shut it down for the night with the web interface. I could not do that with the WD NAS.I am completely satisfied with my purchase, and highly recommend this device for home storage. Next maybe explore an option for a media device for all the movies and TV shows I have. One thing that is amazing, ALL my Android devices not talk to the NAS2, I could not do that with the NAS1. This makes it possible to access my files and videos wherever I am in the world. Quite cool eh?I give it 4.5 stars because of the cover reinstall problem, Synology, please redesign the cover.

home NAS from a large, well-respected company
A home NAS from a large, well-respected company. Synology is a growing Taiwanese company that makes a wide variety of IT products for mid-sized companies. Their offerings for home use (routers, NAS, etc..) are pro-sumer grade. The DS124 comes with all the software you need (free), to back-up on a schedule or live from your computer to the NAS or from NAS to NAS (on-site or off-site). Also includes an app for 24/7/365 recording of surveillance cameras and 3 free licenses. Great manufacturer support, free software updates, anti-virus, everything you need to have a reliable home NAS

Great single disk NAS. Much faster than the DS110j
I had a DS110j that Synology no longer supported, and it was starting to die. I finally replaced it with this DS124. The migration was unbelievably simple. All I had to do was remove the drive from my DS110j and install it into the DS124. The Synology software did the rest. I still have the same IP address; the login and password are the same as those for the DS110j. I use Kodi to access my videos and music, and it works as if I never replaced the NAS.

Absolute garbage, you'd be better served just writing down the binary info on dried leaves.
I'm on my second one. The first one wouldn't even boot properly. The second one was at least able to boot, but trying to run any of the apps you might want to run on a NAS proved impossible. I finally just decided to let it run as a network drive that I would just move files to when needed. And this worked for a few months.I recently needed to log back into the NAS to make a new user, when much to my surprise I was greeted with a 2fa app login.I never installed an app for this type of login. The password didn't work anymore. My only login method was a 2fa app I don't have. I attempted to reset the device so I could log back in, but once it was reset the device was no longer on my network. the find webapp also is unable to find it. I attempted to powercycle it and it won't turn on anymore.Never buy synology. For anything ever.

Good Value
I upgraded from a DS116 released in 2016. Gotta admit it doesn't feel that much faster for a low-demand NAS. But I figure ten years is about due time for a direct replacement and the DS124 fit the bill. Nothing fancy for the price, should work fine, should do everything before without issue. Looks the same, feels the same, that was the goal.I didn't realize Migration Assistant is not available for anything in the budget/lower-end range. So I just plugged in the new DS124 with new drive, ran initial setup, and manually dragged things over the network. Whatever, data is there now. I don't see how that could be so resource-intensive to just initiate a point-to-point transfer but that's not my call. This is a single bay but if you need redundancy, you can install one of the cloud services and back up what you need. I've used S3 and Backblaze B2 over the years, both fairly reasonably priced for non-TB amounts of data automatically uploaded.I run Plex only as a media server, no transcoding. The old one played say 50GB files fine over the network ok and the new one hasn't been a problem. To serve files and act as a basic simple NAS, the single bays are fine. My acquired media files are not worth backing up, assess your own needs and situation.

The DS124 successfully backs up Windows 10 and Windows 11 computers
Last week I bought a Synology DS124 because my DS220+ died in service. The DS220+ had a good power supply but no lights went on when attempting to start the unit. I removed my 10Tb drive from the DS 220+ and installed it into the DS124. The brief user's guide that came with the DS124 was helpful but the complete user's guide (pdf download from Synology) was much better. As part of the startup process the 10Tb hard drive was reformatted and the "Synology Assistant" made the startup process easy. Suggestion: read the brief manual and the bigger pdf manual before starting up the DS124 for the first time. You may also want to look up a video on the web about installation and setup of the DS124. Do not try to hurry through this process -- take your time and get it right! I am using the NAS to backup two computers that reside on my local area network. My backup software is the "Windows 7 Backup & Restore" that comes with Windows 10 and Windows 11.Suggestion: after you do your first backup take the "big jump" and try to restore all the files (or at least some of the files) that you backed up. That will demonstrate that you were actually able to restore files that you have backed up. Finally, the backup of files is not rapid. Expect a 1 TB drive to take about 1 and 1/2 hours and a larger backups will take longer. If you want very fast backups you need to choose a much more expensive NAS and and more sophisticated (and expensive) backup software.
