Ashes Of American Flags follows Wilco from Tulsa, OK to Washington, D.C during its 2008 U.S tour of ballrooms, clubs and concert halls, capturing the six-piece band, and three-man horn section at such hallowed venues as Tipitina's in New Orleans and the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville. This feature-length DVD is a concert film of extraordinary intimacy, with HD cameras primarily on the stage and often inches away from singer-songwriter Jeff Tweedy's microphone or drummer Glenn Kotche's cymbals. The DVD also functions as an evocative travelogue, a document of the band's physical and emotional journey. Co-directors Brendan Canty and Christoph Green track Wilco's tour bus across the country, taking in both the wide-angle beauty and William Eggleston-like desolation of the highways and cities they pass through.

Great Band
One of the best bands ever great video covering various pieces from their travels on the road. Highly recommended for any Wilco fans out there looking for more in depth coverage of the band.

Wilco Burns It Up
Already a fan of Wilco, I bought this with a lot of hesitancy, thinking "Oh what the hell is this going to add to my enthusiasm for Wilco?" but it's so well done that it won me over quickly. Concert films are pretty boring face it, unless you love the band, and would a concert film open you up to a band if you weren't already a fan? I think this one might. Jeff Tweedy's tongue-in-cheek wry Midwestern banter between songs is something to relish at their concerts, and you get a few bits of that here. Mostly you get fine performances, several of which appear to be shot during sound checks in the venue, which means you get the best acoustics w/o distracting audience shots. If you already love Wilco--and you know you're out there--some favorite songs are presented with extended solos by Nils and Jeff. It's almost watching the whole video for a moment when Nils is on the phone with somebody after a gig. He's eating chips. We don't know who he's talking to but the conversation turns to how pathetic and sad the person on the other end of the line is--it's Glenn, who is practicing in the tour bus.

BEST ROCK BAND ON THE PLANET AS OF 6/18/09
This document is very well recorded and shows this great, tight, professional band in a couple different sized venues doing their thing.I just had the opportunity to see Wilco on Friday June 13, in Cincinnati, Ohio and they were amazing. One thing guaranteed about seeing Wilco perform, if you're not a fan going in, you will be one when you walk out. They played for 2-1/2 hours without a break; Jeff, what can I say about Jeff? Is he the coolest dude on the planet? But he does need a haircut. Pat Sansone has got the rock guitar god moves down! With the power windmill chords, etc.Surely a lot different in June '09 compared to when I saw Wilco at the Graffiti lounge in Pittsburgh in '93 or '94 - Jay Bennett had just joined the band. My kids and I got to slap high fives with the band on their way to the dressing room after the show - that was cool.I can't say enough about this rock group.Jeff's words are poetry, not rock lyrics, set to interestingly melodictunes that spin in different directions, time changes, bridging space anddistance. In Cincinnati, hearing 2,700 fans sing the words along with Jeff and John and Pat was amazing. Every song a sing-a-long.The only better rock concert I've experienced in my 58 years of having ears wasseeing The Band at Syria Mosque in Pittsburgh in 1970. But that's another story.

This is a Great DVD to have in the collection
This is a Great DVD to have in the collection. It shows just how good Wilco are. Excellent musicians, Great Live Performance, tight sound, as others have said, if you're a Wilco fan it's a must have....This movie reminds me a lot of my favourite Rock Movie, The Last Waltz by The Band, excellent performance by very talented musicians and interesting behind the scenes stories.....Wilco are a no bulls***, down to earth, genuine, middle aged men who are oozing talent.....Great to see all the Guitar parts played out on Impossible Germany. That rates up there with a lot of Classic Rock songs with Big Solo's from the Big Players from the 70's. Several come to mind for me, both British and American.

Next best thing to seeing them live
I've had this DVD for a while and only watched it once. I saw Wilco in Savannah (3/25/2010) and have been watching Jeff since the Uncle Tupelo days. Wilco in its current incarnation is now probably the finest touring American band and having just watched this DVD again it really does a great job of capturing the concert experience, picking some excellent performances of Wilco favorites. What really makes this great is the backdrop of small-ish (OK, DC's not that small) American towns, and how it impacts the music. You get to see backstage vignettes showing what the band goes through to put on close to 3 hour shows night after night. Very highly recommended for even the most casual of Wilco fans.

Best live sound and visuals
I have seen Wilco live several times and even saw the tour that is covered in this DVD. The quality of the sound and visuals of the band are great. You can hear every part. The only thing I would say I didn't enjoy was all of the tight shots of the band members and especially Jeff Tweedy. I wanted a concert in my living room and for the most part I got it but there were moments they needed to take in the whole band.Great shows, great sound and well worth the $$.

Current Wilco at Their Very Best
"Ashes of American Flags" documents a short concert swing from about a year ago, with Wilco playing such classic small Southern venues such as Tipitina's in New Orleans and the Ryman Theatre in Nashville. They filmed five shows in their entirety, and picked out the best performances from them. The result is a 90 minute document of the current Wilco lineup at the their very best. The film-work is great, but mostly importantly, the performances are astoundingly good, and they cover a wide range or materials, from the super-rocking "Monday" from "Being There" to material from "Sky Blue Sky," including an absolutely remarkable version of "Impossible Germany." This is certainly a "must have" for any fan of Wilco, and I think even those who only know a little about the band will be moved by the powerful and profound performances.

Replacement Copy
I love this DVD. It has some amazing concert and interview footage on it and was available at a time I wanted to see them more often than they came around. They still don’t come here often, but I misplaced the DVD somehow and was so excited to find a copy here. If you love Wilco, this is an essential for any collection.

Top quality live DVD
It's good to have a road movie-style DVD from Wilco in colour, following the monochrome I Am Trying To Break Your Heart. There's not quite so much of the road in this one but the interlinking sections between the live footage are interesting and add a lot of depth. The main feature though is the live performances which are, as you'd expect from this band, electrifying good. They're all on top form and the sound quality does it justice. There's even some amusing banter and a delightful incident with a bra.All in all, if you love Wilco you'll really like this. If you don't know who Wilco are this wouldn't be a bad starting place but you will end up wanting the albums too!

Unexpectedly Excellent
Wilco fans have been waiting for some time for a document of just how good a live band the current Wilco lineup is. The problem is, a mere concert DVD will never suffice, given the inevitable comparisons this film wlll endure with Sam Jones's superb "I am Trying to Break Your Heart" documentary. That film, shot in black and white, had a story to tell and chronicled a very creative, yet turbulent period in the band's history. This film does not try to compete, but still aims to make things interesting. As a result, several classic American venues were picked for the concert footage, which was filmed in a claustrophobically close-up fashion. This means that the wide shots or larger stages (Mobile, Alabama) seem almost welcome relief. However, the film captures in almost minute detail, the experience of being on the road with Wilco. It also vividly portrays the individual brilliance of the performers. All I can really say as a recommendation, is that watching this DVD is exactly like being at a Wilco show. If you can persuade someone to sing all the lyrics tunelessly somewhere behind you and also get someone to dance, insanely, right in front of you, then I just wouldn't bother going to a show - you're there!Superbly filmed, great sound, great songs and currently the greatest American live band - enough said.

Reality check
Just as you might expect from such an apparently laid back bunch we see the true highs and lows of life on the road. At times amusing the film serves to temper the myth that "rock 'n roll" is a glamorous pursuit. Relatively intimate venues help to showcase one of the finest live acts around today. If you appreciate musicianship of the highest order then I urge you to invest, you won't regret it. Truly five stars.(even with the assistance of painkillers!)
