The Homecoming (Wonderfully Illustrated Short Pieces, 2)

I’d never read this short story before, but was intrigued by Dave McKean’s dark illustrations. His style is well suited to the strangeness of this tale, flowing with such evocative descriptions:“I see a wolflike thing crossing a dark river —at the shallows— just above a waterfall, the starlight burning his pelt. I see maple leaves blowing high. I see a small bat flying. I see many creature beasts, running under the forest trees and slipping through the highest branches; and they’re all heading here!”The style and story may not appeal to everyone, as it leaps from living to dead, from real to surreal, like a fitful breeze. I think this is an interesting and fast read for All Hallows’ Eve or All Souls’ Night.

A gift for a friend. I have treasured Bradury's stories since I was young. I met him in 1992 , and he was congenial , wonderful, and kind as always. When I saw Dave McKean illustrated this one, I had to buy it. McKean's drawings are like dreams and nightmares, and like Bradbury. No one else can do what they do. What a combo.I love the story of Timothy ,too, and can appreciate what he is feeling. Bradbury can bring humanity even to "monsters". This story is lovely and sweet, and it is clear that McKean,too, loved the story, as he puts is heart and passion into the drawings.Lovely stuff.

I have to start by saying that the illustrations in this book are stunning! To couple this with such a fantastic story is a stroke of genius. Illustrated books for adults is a fantastic idea! This is a beautiful piece for any Bradbury collector!

Bradbury's story (is it really that old?) has a quirky charm, the kind of familial affection that Addams Family fans will recognize immediately. A family that lives on the dark side of reality sires a boy who, however he tries to fit in, really fits closer to the squeaky-clean world of Leave it to Beaver - but they love him anyway, and do their best to accommodate his special needs.Despite its Halloween theme, the happy, affectionate tone of the text comes through ahead of everything else. McKean's idiosyncratic and adaptable style carries the mood and story beautifully.So why not the fifth star that art and story deserve? It's the typography. Somehow, the masterful arts of story-teller and image-maker have been paired with typographic treatment at at the level of blunt scissors and edible paste. The printed word can add so much, when done with grace and insight - or can be done the way you'll see here.-- wiredweird

Great story coupled with entrancing illustrations. You can't go wrong with this book. A little smaller than I expected, but I love it.

Beautiful little book. I love Bradbury and I love Dave Mckean. Together they are glorious.I recomend this book to everyone who loves any of these two amazing artists. Also I think it's perfect as a present.Like a little jewel.

An excellent story by Bradbury beautifully illustrated by Dave McKean. First published in 1946. A must have for collectors or for aficionados of illustration books for adults. This is a short story so 56 pages only.

This is a beautiful book, both in writing & illustration. The story & style may be a tad heavy handed/deep for younger readers/audiences. This is NOT a 'Happily Ever After" tale. But, rather a bittersweet narrative about those who don't fit in, even in one's own 'family'.
