Quality construction. Clever design -- it's many knockoffs attest to that. Love it.
This is just a delightful router plane. Very high quality. Nice to look at. Nice in the hands. Their are many knockoffs of this man's clever design. I bought this in appreciation of his ingenious re-imagining of the router plane. No funky right angle blades. Super easy sharpening. Easy adjustment. Extremely good visibility of work -- tool does not obscure the work in process as much as many router planes do. Get it. It's a nice tool.

Cowryman Router Plane - good value!
I'm a long time hand tool woodworker making furniture, small projects like jewelry boxes and even a few acoustic guitars. I've been using hand tools for almost 20 years. The router plane is, in my view, the 2nd most useful hand plane (after a simple apron block plane) and should be a must have tool for even power tool users. I have small collection of Lee Valley/Veritas router planes and they work great but they suffer from the challenge of sharpening the blades. That was the first think that intrigued me with the Cowryman Router Plane. The machine marks were very obvious when I got the plane but the blade sharpened easily. I was able to get a mirror polish on both the back (the actual cutting edge) and the 25 degree bevel. Time will tell whether the steel of the blade holds an edge for a decent amount of time. In my quick test on Oak and Pine, it remained sharp so I'm hopeful. I also liked the large base which gives a nice flat platform to tune in fits for wide dado's, rebates, and tenons. The base's edges though should be filed down as they are fairly sharp out of the box making it a bit uncomfortable to hold. A little filing should fix this though. I wish the knobs where larger, maybe double the size, as this would make it easier to hold. Lastly, you can't beat the price. Overall, this looks like it will be a good worker in my shop. Falls just short of perfect
Decent tool. The sole is bent on it though. It bends very noticeably at the bolt holes for the block that holds the knife in place. So the middle is higher than the two ends. Will make your route uneven if you switch between both ends of the tool on your piece and one end on your piece. I haven’t used the fence yet, so I can’t speak to that. The handles are comfy though, and it actually is a pretty good weight. You can get some force behind it if you need. The depth adjustment screw is a little sloppy, but it stays if you have pressure on it. The blade stays sharp for long enough, I think. I’d recommend this for beginning woodworkers who need a router plane to get started with. One tip I’ll share as well is to get some paste wax and apply to the sole. That will really help this thing glide across your work piece.

Happy with it, glad I bought one.
Very happy with this Router plane. Not a Veritas by any measure but it works just the same. I polished the blade, filed the edges of the base a little, drilled some holes to mount a larger base when needed. Next I will turn some larger handles for it. For the price I am very happy and really it is not that far behind the high dollar routers that I have used. It does its job, does it well, and at a price I can afford. I bought two router planes, three English made handsaws (a panel, a rip, and tenon saw), and an English made mallet for the price of the one Veritas router plane that I was looking at. So your dollar goes a little further to say the least. Way faster to use and set up as opposed to an electric router.

R022 Cowryman is a winner
Razor sharp out of the box. Solid stainless steel precisely machined plate. Blade design being a straight rod (and not L-shape blade like Veritas or Lie-Nielsen) makes it extremely easy to sharpen using honing jig, which you are already using for your chisels and hand plane blades. So you get precise and consistent sharpening. Adjustable side fence comes in the box, so no need to buy additional accessories. They are now giving quick cam action lock lever along with alternative wing nut to tighten the cut depth adjustment. Overall Cowryman is a winner.

I like this router plane overall
I like this router plane overall, it does it's main purpose (for me finishing up tennons and dados) very well. The blade is nice and sharp outta the box, didn't even need a hone yet. This is made from a plate of steel with everything boltes on. To me that means if I blame my kids 😁 for knocking on to the floor I can probably fix it, cuz you know, no busted cast metal. The base is 1/4" thick so no noticable flexing either. My only real issue is the knobs, they are nicely turned but too small. Base is 3/4" with the crown at 1 1/4", my palm measures shy of 5" across. If your thinking hand cramps, you'd be right. I'm making new ones soon. The fence that comes with stops at 3/4" from edge of the blade limiting it's use some if making a stopped groove on a frame rail. To that extent, on narrower stock if needed to start cut from the end of, has little at the front for tool support. Overall tho, I like it, and at the price it's far less than the other current makers and I've expressed my concerns to the maker who hopefully addresses at least the knob size. Oh, I forget, there is no attachment point to add a hardwood to the base if we want. Not a deal breaker at all tho, you can figure it out quite easily. Good tool, if you don't have a router plane you should get one.

Works better than expected
This works great. I use it for cleaning out the bottom of dado joints and for touching up tenon cheeks. The base plate is a great size for reaching off the end of a piece to do the tenon. If you need a very fine tool (inlay?) then you might be better off with the lie Nielsen or Veritas, but this is perfect for me. I am an engineer that does traditional fine woodworking as a side gig.

Bon produit

Good for cleaning up areas wider then a rabbit or dado.

I have been a Carpenter for over 40 years but with this being the first time to buy a hand router, I ordered the Cowryman and Extra Blades at the same time. The order shipped together and arrived promptly and well packaged. Firstly, the Router with 8mm cutter and extra 3mm & 6mm cutters are considerably cheaper than any other Router I have seen online, so it seemed well worth taking a chance on it. It looks quite different to others on the market but that is what happens when patterns evolve over time - and if that is what it takes to make things cheaper, then I am all in favour. One thing is for sure, it doesn't look substandard in anyway. I have seen several reviews mentioning the small knobs being a problem but I have smallish hands, so they feel fine to me. They are well made and secure. The Router came with an alternative Nut that has a lever for those who prefer that arrangement; I don't mind either way because the winged screw fitted during manufacture works well and is unobtrusive. I have to say that as soon as I opened the box, the whole thing did look very well made and is far better than even the online pictures show. It is quite a fair old chunk for what it is, too; not at all a lightweight and flimsy thing. Even the guide rail is thicker than I assumed it would be; it does not slide to the edge of the cutter but I have a Record Combination Plane which takes care of that rebating requirement. It clamps securely onto the plate for other operations...and that is all that matters to me. The base is made from beautifully machined thick metal and is very impressive, being a nice polished finish that far exceeds the quality of many other tools these days. The cutter adjusts smoothly and works perfectly straight from the box, though I dare say that a little honing never does any harm in improving what is already more than acceptable. The extra cutters come in their own little plastic containers and again, they are of excellent quality. Even the 'Thank You' note that comes with the router was quite a pleasant thing to read. All in all, I have to say that the whole Router & Cutters bundle is probably the most pleasing and satisfying purchase that I have made in a long time, especially when it comes to new tools. I am absolutely confident that it will easily last me for the rest of my working and hobbyist life and will no doubt become someone else's for a long time after that. I would highly recommend this product to anyone who is thinking of buying a hand router, whether they be beginner, long time amateur or even lifetime professional. It may look different to traditional designs but don't let the pictures put you off - I am sure you will be surprised when you get hold of one. I was waiting for a Lie-Nielsen to return to stock here in UK but have now cancelled my pre-order as a result of buying the Cowryman because it is more than adequate for hobbyist use in my home workshop when not otherwise working as a Carpenter. I am not a tool snob and if something feels solid and works well, why pay a lot more for so little extra?
