The best
These reeds are the best. My daughter tried a few different brands before these but nothing sounded as good as Vandorens. We will continue to purchase these.

Authentic Van Doren reeds
I'm a professional clarinet player and have played Van Doren reeds almost exclusively since 1975. Although not currently my first choice, (I switched to synthetic reeds), that is irrelevant to anyone who wants cane reeds.I prefer V12 to other Van Doren styles because they work better with my Behn Epic mouthpiece. Individual players may like other styles, but V12 works for the sound I like for orchestral, band, chamber, and solo work. These are authentic Van Dorens, as verified by putting individual reed codes (stamped on the back of each reed) into the Van Doren reed authenticator on their website. Beware of knockoffs--always check your reed codes, especially if you order online from a source you aren't familiar with.I give 4 stars because Van Doren reeds are notorious for having only a small percentage which are really good--the rest require reed adjustment, which takes a degree of knowledge, skill, patience and time, not to mention tools.I trust this supplier to have authentic Van Dorens.

Maybe not the top dog anymore, but still a great cut.
I use a combination of many brands nowadays and the main thing I like about the V12's is that although it might be a little harder to find that "good" reed or two in the box compared to other brands nowadays that have 2-4 good reeds per box, the reeds last way longer than other brands, more than making up for the difference. These reeds are very robust, you can break them in a bit more aggressively and not worry about them dying as much. I play about 3 times per week on average (2+ hours) and have had some of these in my vandoren case that are literally 3 years old and as long as you keep cycling your reeds properly, they will last. Are they overpriced? The Amazon price is actually extremely good and I think still makes them a good value. I've tried some newer reeds, some that outperform these for band music where a little more brightness is tolerable and enjoyable but I still think the V12 is a great cut for an all-rounder reed that can tackle many different styles of music in one sitting. My only complaint is that they don't come in quarter sizes like most newer reeds do. Easily fixed by sanding down the bottom on the Vandoren glass resurfacing kit.

Still Among the Finest
The Vandoren V-12 reed seems to have been a response to the needs of plays several decades ago who turned to brands such as Olivieri and Morre. As a professional clarinetist who has played a variety of mouthpieces and reeds over the years, it has always been my experience that these thick-blank reeds work best on mouthpieces with a long facing, and usually a mouthpiece with at least a medium tip opening. The Vandoren V-12 reeds might not possess the mystique of the Morre (which were always difficult to obtain, but they are closer to the classic thick-blank style of the past than the Vandoren traditional cut reeds. Generally, I have found that the V-12 reeds are more consistent than Vandoren's traditional cut reeds. If you are a Vandoren user and never tried the V-12 reeds, just be aware that you may need to try a different strength than what you are used to. It has been my experience that the V-12 cut is more flexible at the tip, so (contrary to what conventional wisdom might suggest) sometimes people use a 1/2 strength higher with the V-12. In their packaging, Vandoren seems to be making a big deal about the consistency of humidity that is maintained from manufacturing plant to user in their new packaging. Frankly, I have noticed little difference. In any case, recent Vandoren V-12 #4 reeds that I've used seem to make producing a full, rich, consistently dark tone easy for the experienced player. Put another way: I've spent time using professional reeds from just about every company, but I keep coming back to the Vandoren V-12.
