TROPICA® - Old Man of the Andes (Oreocereus celsianus) - 40 SeedsWorth knowing: This little to medium sized (up to 1,50 metres) but slow growing cactus has no trouble tolerating considerable variations in temperature. The name “oreocereus” means “mountain cactus” and is composed of “cereus” = cactus and the Greek word “oros” = mountain.Origin: The Bolivian and North-Argentinean Andes.Propagation: Seeds can be started indoors at any time throughout the year. Mix fine ground cultivation soil with about 25 % of fine sand (silica sand works best). In order to guarantee that the seeds will not fall through the soil, the soil mixture should not be too coarse. All cacti are light germinators, therefore the seeds should be left uncovered. Sufficient warmth (16 to 25°C) and high humidity are crucial now. Place / Light: The cactus loves sunny places. It is there, where its white, dense and wool-haired beauty are perfectly set off.Care: Water only after the substratum has dried out. Young plants should generally be kept a little moister. Rain water and water free of lime are ideal. A surplus of water should be poured out in order to avoid standing water and root rotting. The flowering period falls into the summer months when the plant is growing bright-red flowers, about 7 cm long in size. Do not fertilize during the flowering period. Supply the plant with cactus fertilizer at intervals of 3 weeks from March until the end of June.Winter period: Being a mountain cactus, the cactus does not tolerate heated rooms with temperatures exceeding 10°C. Basement rooms with lots of light, cool staircases, unheated bedrooms or – depending on the age of the plant – a sheltered outdoor position are ideal.Bonsai Suitability: No
