ORIGINAL ALBUM CLASSICS - NEW RIDERS Of The PURPLE SAGE (Columbia/Legacy | Sony Music) 5CD Box CD 1 - NEW RIDERS OF THE PURPLE SAGE (aka N.R.P.S) A delightful and very cool sounding debut album that was originally released on a CBS LP in 1971. It features Grateful Dead's Jerry Garcia and (on two tracks only) Grateful Dead's Mickey Hart & Commander Cody. This is a very unique country rock album. *This CD edition has 3 bonus live tracks tagged on to the end of the original studio album. CD 2 - POWERGLIDE Recorded and released 1972. A great 2nd album that includes guest musicians Jerry Garcia and Bill Kreutzmann from the Grateful Dead, along with noted keyboard session player Nicky Hopkins. The sound quality on this Legacy CD version sounds better to me than how I remember the orginal LP - so much so I now rank this recording even higher than when I owned a copy of the original vinyl. * It was odd when Columbia/CBS originally released this LP it was in a cover that omitted to mention the name of the artist and the track listing. CD 3 - GYPSY COWBOY Recorded & released 1972. A stunning third album from the New Riders with a mixture of original and beautifully recorded tracks, including the heavyweight and lengthy Death & Destruction (which reminded me at times of Crazy Horse in full flight), plus some fine cover versions. *This CD edition includes 4 live bonus tracks - 3 of these 4 live bonus tracks are lifted from Home, Home on the Road LP (CD 5 in this box). The other live track, a version of Superman, is the exact same recording as the bonus one that has been added (along with two other previously unreleased tracks - The Weight & Down In The Boondocks) at the end of the box set version of the debut/first studio album (CD 1). CD 4 - THE ADVENTURES OF PANAMA RED Original LP was released in 1973. It has been a real pleasure to hear this album again. This disc has impressed me much more than expected. The recording has stood the test of time very well. Last time I heard it was the late 1970s! CD 5 - HOME, HOME ON THE ROAD Released in 1974. Produced by Jerry Garcia. For whatever reason I never rated the live LP when I owned it - but now I have heard the CD version in the 5 CD box that opinion has been reversed! This is a superb live album. The mastering on the CD is spot on, and outside of the delightful 'Sutter's Mill' it's all stunning, high energy playing throughout. All CDs are separately housed in single cardboard mini replica LP single sleeves - so no double cover for The Adventures Of Panama Red. I think the photo cover of the box itself is very eye catching. There is no booklet included, and no mastering credits are given but having said that all CDs sound as good as you could wish for. Any other missing recording information should be easy to find online. The cardboard box was made in the EU. The outer cardboard is made of thinner cardboard and is slightly smaller than any previous Sony 5CD box I've seen, - but no problem as all 5 discs fit into it OK. This is a wonderful collection that will delight any lover of country rock (or as another reviewer called it - stoner rock!) All music on this 5 CD budget box was taken from Sony Music's original tapes, so there are no worries about being conned with cloned CDs or sub-standard/secretly packaged CD-Rs. If you have been curious enough to check out the reviews, chances are you will not be disappointed with any aspect of this wee box. If still in doubt about purchase check the cost of this box against any of the stand alone CDs that are included and you will see what a crackin' good deal this is. **NOTE Amazon have tagged some reviews onto The New Riders box set that have absolutely nothing to do with this product/item**

Found a track on the album that has been used by radio Caroline and that was one reason why I chose it, pleased I did, it's a good selection of albums that are going to be great to listen to. Thanks 😊

I was expecting the sound to sparkle like new, but for those people wanting to hear the original LP sound, this collection won't be disapointing. I had to increase the volume [set for Ali Farka Toure 'Savane'] to get a decent sound, and as I have two of the original LPs I know the sound, and who wants a muted compressed LP sound rather than a clear BIG dynamic enthralling remastered CD??. Any original fans will be in their 60/70's so hearing loss is to be taken into account!! having said that, the original LP sound is very good! ............Here is a band that encapsulates the optimistic hippy era, and its demise [last lonely eagle]. 4 stars for sound 4 stars for content.

A superb overview of the work of the early NRPS... Can't be bettered in terms of quality and value for money.

Oh man. The first five Riders albums in one package. Remastered with bonus tracks on the first album and Gypsy Cowboy. Would be easy to forget how good they were...this is a great reminder. As stoner country rock goes this is perfect. Can we have a volume 2 covering the Skip Battin albums please???

A new discovery. Similar to the Flying Burrito Brothers and Pure Prairie League. A bargain, five albums in one. Each album has bonus tracks some of which appear on the last album, a live album.

This 5 CD set is a fantastic deal. My albums were pretty much worn out so I jumped right on this collection, All albums contain the original members before they started splitting off, except Panama Red and the live CD have Skip Batten on bass. Buddy Cage is one of the greatest pedal steel players ever ,and David Nelson is ripping on guitar. I dont think the albums were remastered but the sound is still good to my ears. I love these CD package deals.
