Hoovers at their Golden Jubilee.
An eye-opener as far as the life of this class of locomotive is concerned and how they were treated by British Railways various maintenance depots. The prototype - DP2 - pointed the way that a well designed and maintained loco should perform during it's short life. Then the "boffins" of BR decided that more bells and whistles were needed which, in time, were to prove to have severe repercussions on their performances until the mid-life refurbishment of the whole class was performed. What these machines were capable of was finally brought into focus where depots were able to turn out reliable equipment until the eventual withdrawal came which made the Hoovers such an iconic machine.Fortunately, the heritage movement made sure that a large percentage of these locomotives were kept alive with expertise from former engineers from BR and that we have today witnessed some extraordinary feats of haulage that speak volumes for their present owners dedication to keep them running. Even Network Rail hire them for movement of their own rail equipment as well as the various tour companies and long may that last. This book opens up the world of heavy rail engineering with details of their complexity and the trials and tribulations of maintenance of such iconic machines. Numerous personal appraisals are interspersed throughout accompanied by superb photographs which bring the whole work into sharp focus and into the present day as the 50th anniversary of the 50's entry into service comes due very shortly. Altogether a highly informative book and a mine of reference information which will last for many years.

An excellent and well thought out book.
Excellent book. Well thought out. I particularly like the chapter written by Driver Middleton regarding his experiences with the locomotives. I hope that future Haynes Manuals will be published in the about other British Railway locomotives etc.

Hoover reading for the Enthusiast
This book is not an operations manual or anything that is useful to a driver. It is however a great read for anybody wanting another book to add to their book collection of this Class 50.
