Mitutoyo quality
As exspected you get what you pay for. I use this indicator every day. I'm a Machinist in the steam turbine and nuclear power industry. So my equiptment has to perform at the highest levels. It's not a starrett but for the money it gets the job done well. The action is smooth and repeats every time. You can spend alot of money on junk or cry once on the good stuff. I only buy starrett mitutoyo noga. I've learned over the 30 plus years of machining if you want good parts coming out you have to invest up front on good indication equiptment. Your cuts will only be as good as your setup.

Mitutoyo"2416S" Dial Indicator nice unit
This is my first quality dial indicator. I've been purchasing the cheaper HF versions because well, I needed it now and the store was just down the road. In this town it's the only place I can find a dial indicator. Is there a difference between the cheap and a Mitutoyo? absolutely! the movement is silky smooth and readings are repeatable. Some of the cheaper variants I've picked up on Amazon; and I ended up sending back because the readings were not repeatable. I'd evaluate the indicator on a 1 2 3 block. Oddly enough, I find the indicator so nice I'm afraid to use it on my lathe; which is why I purchased it in the first place.

Perfect for my work
Since starting my own shop I've at some point lost my old indicator setup I used in the dealerships truing motorcycle wheels. I'd assumed that my old one was a nice indicator as it wasn't all that cheap when purchased from our catalogs. I was hoping to find one "as good" and seem to have acquired one that was actually nicer. Perhaps much nicer. I'm no machinist so I can't speak for the quality in that specific of a setting, but this little indicator is as nice as any I've encountered in my career. I took a little leap and ordered it from the "Amazon Warehouse" for roughly $40, but it arrived with all of the paperwork and a properly functioning indicator. This unit may be nicer than you will actually need if you're truing wheels. That said, I'm not upset in the least with this purchase. If you're looking for an indicator for that purpose this one will more than suffice.

It Is a Genuine Mitutoyo Dial Indicator
This is a genuine Mitutoyo dial indicator and not a counterfeit that are now common. The external appearance shows high-quality machining/production. My certificate shows the same serial number that's on the tool, and I haven't seen that number used on others from photos I have found online. I pulled the rear cover, and the internals are identical to genuine Mitutoyo internals with almost all the gears being metal except what looks like one of the dial/needle gears might be plastic (or anodized black), but I can't get to it to really tell. The counterfeits have far fewer components inside and use a lot of plastic. I compared the measurements I got against a standard, and they are spot on.

High Quality at a Fair Price
Typical Mitutoyo quality at a fair price. Silky smooth operation. Last year I bought a cheap dial indicator set with magnetic base and extra spindles for a ridiculously low price and as expected, got what I paid for. The cheap magnetic base works ok, but the cheap dial indicator is very rough and jerky. All of the cheap accessories work with the new Mitutoyo. I paid more than double the cost of the cheap one for just the Mitutoyo indicator but it is well worth it. Two thumbs up!

Solid Instrument
This indicator seems to be built well. It has a good fit and finish as you would expect to find with Mitutoyo. In terms of repeatability and accuracy I did not have a chance to measure, though the indicator came with a spec sheet. Passing a 2 rev indication within 0.001" accuracy. The only problem I have with the indicator is the bezel ring, it is plastic. It zeros extremely smooth and has a good resistance to hold position. I have compared the indicator movement with a Starret 25-441J indicator(whose bezel ring is also plastic) and I feel that the Mitutoyo is smoother and feels better put together less run out on the stem bore, however the Starrett has better plunger sensitivity. That of course is my own opinion.
