Blade Of The Immortal

Visually riveting
Five stars. I came upon this movie by accident while I was looking for something interesting to watch. This is an unusual long movie. I do not know anything about the backstory or where the characters came from but it held my interest from the first 15 seconds of action and kept me interested for the remainder of the time. This is a cleverly written and shot film. Not particularly a movie for those that don’t think or appreciate art in cinema. Even for action film folks this is a really got a lot of action. But for those that do like something different you can immerse yourself into this film. It reminded me of the Akira Kurosawa films. Not a copy by any stretch it’s different but cut of the same bolt of cloth.Visually it’s pretty gory and a lot of sword stuff. But the storyline was unusual and the actors were fantastic. The writing was full of unpredictable twists. The direction was really intricate. The photography was balanced throughout the whole film. The rustic scenery set and locations were created/selected with a high production and storyline value. The music score was almost invisible but played a tremendous part in emphasizing the critical shots. This is a movie to get lost in for 2 1/2 hours.

HORRIBLY BEAUTIFUL! AN EXHAUSTINGLY EPIC SWEATFEST OF CUTLERY
I waited until the last few hours of its departure from Amazon......and I can't believe I waited that long.It is a horribly beautiful masterpiece!I know nothing of the manga. So there's no comparison and therefore no disappointment.I love Samurai movies and I loved THIS movie. It's a great movie. Most of the negative criticisms are from complaints that it doesn't exactly match the source.Welcome to movies, grasshoppers.Movies have never done a book justice, although a rare few have outshone their source.Been that way since day one. It's best to view each on its own.Really, the only way to combat head explosions is to understand and accept that. The movie made my sensors tremble with satisfaction! The gore, the violence, the pain, and emotion checked every box.Entertained the hell out of me with no boring scenes.Takashi Miike is brilliant.Takyua Kimura is now one of my most favorite actors.Sota Fukushi is straight out of Tiger Beat magazine.Hana Sugisaki is incredibly annoying. Just shows she nails her character, I guess.

Better having read the manga? Probably
I have read the manga...and so I don't know if that added or was a hindrance, since I can't imagine how this movie would work if I knew nothing about the story. I think it might be a bit shallow and confusing, at least as it applies to all the secondary characters, who all have back stories and arcs in the manga. Here, they are just basically background characters with a few lines. It is a huge story and this movie is only able to show a small percentage of it, but I guess it hits the high points of the first half of the books. It does a decent enough job of showing the relationship of Manji and Rin, but without the time to breathe as the plot chugs along, a lot of the more quiet and humorous moments are lost. And so there is a loss of depth to the characters and their relationship. However, all of this does not take away from what is actually on screen...the actors, direction, cinematography, costumes, props, sets and locations achieve something satisfying to watch. So I would say if you know the manga, then this is a pretty good chance to see a 'best of' medley brought to life in a spectacular looking cinematic format. If you don't know the manga, just enjoy the ride.

15+ years of story minus about 10 years squeezed into a 2.5 hour movie.
A very admirable and earnest adaptation of an incredible manga. I started reading the manga when it was first published as a full-size comic book by Dark Horse around 1996 all the way til it's end run a few years ago. I always thought a live-action adaptation would be impossible due to the ultra-violence, complexity of characters and, ofcourse, the sheer length.I guess i shouldn't be surprised that the legendary Takashi Miike would find a way to adapt it. I won't get too into the story and what/who was cut out because it's pointless to talk about in an adaptation like this. The important thing is that it got the point across. Overall, i found the movie very good. The costumes and weapons are spot on perfect. Most of the casting looks just like the manga (in particular Shira, Anotsu, and Magatsu) and the fight choreography is accurate right down to the story panels and the characters' classic poses and mannerisms. Manji didn't quite look like i imagined him but his portrayal was excellent. He had ALL the same mannerisms and even struck the same iconic poses throughout the movie. The attention to detail and being faithful to the characters was very much appreciated.Although this is a very bloody and violent movie, it still does not reach the sheer artistic and beautiful bloodbath of the manga. i guess trying to replicate crazy splash page death scenes w/ CGI would look awful so for that i am very thankful. Highly recommended to any chanbara fans. You will probably enjoy it more if you have never read the manga before. Now if only someone would do a true faithful adaptation as a 4-5 season series...

This turned out to be quite a production.
I was unprepared for what i got...I think I was idly looking at Samurai titles and the cover caught my eye. Due to the virus I've had alot of time so i bought it. It turns out this EPIC production is the 100th film of some guy named Takashi Miike.Never having heard of this director i was unimpressed. After watching this movie I will have to go find his other 99. The whole movie was well done. Awesome camera angles and action sequences. This movie skipped alot of the ordinary pitfalls. In fact my only complaint is that while he may kill 300 guys he does it one at a time.Ok onto what you really need to know. This is a two disc offering with good audio and no skips or jumps.Disc one has the movie and its offered in alot of language selections. Special Features include: Manji vs 300, Photo Gallery and Trailers.Disc 2 [which I have not looked at yet] Contains several cast interviews. This was well worth my time and money.

Dieser Film verdient 500.000 Punkte!
Genial. einfach nur GENIAL!Jede Einstellung ein prachtvolles Stilleben, jede Farbgebung ein Wohlgenuß, jede Szene eine Perfektion!Bildgewaltig!Zen in darstellender Kunst!

Fantastic live action adaptation.
Loved the manga which is was originally introduced me to the series, and even purchased the first season of the anime on blu-ray. Was looking forward to the live action and it did not disappoint. Covered the complete story line of Blade of the Immortal, but could not go into the full detail of the manga series due to its breadth. If this was made into a three or four films then maybe it could cover the full breadth of the manga series in detail, but still a fantastic film.If you are a fan of Blade of the Immortal or of Takashi Miike's films I would most definately recommend this for you.
