This katana is BEAUTIFUL!
I’ll be the first to admit… I’m not that knowledgeable when it comes to katanas, so take that into consideration when attributing value (or not) to my review. I got this katana because I thought it looked really nice in the pictures and I really like all kinds of knives, swords and blades of any kind. This was (and is) my first foray into katanas.I wasn’t expecting this type of quality for the price of this katana. I was expecting something that was cheaply made… felt light in the hand and probably wasn’t finished so nicely.Boy, was I VERY pleasantly surprised when this arrived and I opened it up!This katana has some heft to it! It is NOT a cheap replica type blade made out of aluminum or some other lightweight alloy. This blade appears to be made of steel (I just looked… it is High Carbon Steel according to their description) and has been lasered (I’m guessing) with a very intricate and beautiful design. The handle is wrapped very nicely and intricately with a black cord over top of a white cord with gold interspersed in there as well. It is a very tight weave and is both pleasant to the eye and makes for a very good grip with the hands. The blade collar fits nice and tightly into the scabbard (sheat) with there being absolutely no fear of the scabbard falling off by itself. And speaking of the scabbard… it is BEAUTIFUL! There is a very lovely dragon design on the end of the sheath that is done in black and white and then the color ombres into a lovely gold. The lacquer finish is VERY nicely done! Being a woodworker myself, I’m quite impressed with this wooden scabbard… it is VERY well made!I have NO idea as to whether this blade could be used as an actual weapon… but as far as looks go… this thing is a WINNER! It will be going on display as soon as I can make a stand worthy of it!

Nice for ornamental purposes, but also fairly sharp.
Before I get into the specifics of this review, let's first set the expectation that this is a $79.99 sword at the time of this review. That means that it cannot be fairly judged by the standards of a $500+ hand crafted katana. It should be evident from the product photos that this is the case, but I want to represent this item fairly and without misleading anyone. With that said, here are my specific thoughts:Quality: Overall, this sword is well put together. The handle is secure and nothing feels loose or unsafe. The sheath is also of good quality, though the yellow gradient with the dragon looks/feels a little cheap (more on that in the "Style" section below). Also, the wrap on the handle is well-done and feels good when holding the sword. There are a few small blemishes on the ferrule (shown in the attached pictures, but difficult to photograph) that I could not remove, but they are only visible upon very close inspection.Style: As the product pictures show, this sword is on the "flashy" side and the style reflects that. The designs on the guard and pommel feel somewhat cheap/gaudy as a result. Similarly, the wrap on the sheath would be much nicer with a more understated pattern. Conversely, the dragon pattern on the blade itself actually looks quite nice and does not detract from the sword at all. Similarly, the wrap on the handle includes some gold accents, but still looks quite nice. Overall, this sword would benefit from a little more simplicity in the "small touches", but most of this is not evident unless someone is inspecting it fairly closely.Function: As the product page indicates, this is a functional/sharpened blade. It is definitely NOT a toy and should be handled with care. I have attached a picture that shows the sharpness of the blade when used on a small piece of paper. Notice that the beginning of each cut is rougher because the blade is somewhat dull at the base, but grows sharper toward the tip (where the cut finishes further down the paper). The balance point of the sword is roughly 6" above the guard which is fairly standard for a katana, so it handles in an expected manner. Since this is clearly a mass-produced item that is meant for ornamental purposes, I did not attempt to put the sword through its paces as a weapon. I would not recommend that others try this either.Other thoughts: As show in one of the attached pictures, the sword was a little dirty and needed to be wiped down upon arrival. This is not surprising since blades are often oiled, but it could create quite a mess when showing the blade to someone, so I recommend cleaning it just to be sure. Overall, this is a nice sword for ornamental purposes and it is relatively sharp. It would be a nice conversation piece and would look good displayed on a wall or a stand (out of reach of curious children who may think that it is a toy).

Very pleasantly surprised at the overall quality of this sword.
Let's just start off by saying that I didn't get this sword with the intentions of fighting off an army of ninjas. I got it simply as a decorative display sword. However, with that being said, I was very surprised at how well this seems to be put together. NOTHING is loose fitting, rattly, plastic, or cheap feeling. The sword in it's scabbard ( I know these probably aren't the correct terms for this style sword...carrying on) fits really nice and snug but not so snug that it's difficult to draw out. The scabbard is actual wood with what appears to be a lacquer color to the outside of it. The sword itself is nicely weighted and the blade is sharp!!! The blade pattern is very intricate and I couldn't find a single blemish anywhere on it. You will need to wipe the blade after you first get it as it is oiled well and there was some grit probably from inside the scabbard. Once wiped down, it is very smooth and beautiful to look at. I'm not sure what type of metal the guard is made from but it would be the only piece of the sword that I find questionable on how sturdy it is. Of course I'm not planning to go to battle with it but I'm certain that it would easily injure somebody if used in that manner. I like to do woodworking as a hobby so I'm planning to build a wall mount stand for this to display it in all it's glory. It really does look that good. It has met and surpassed all my expectations. Highly recommend!!!
