Thick, but less compression
No other reviews at time of purchase, so as a polymer chemist I figured I would try it out and inform others. With that:Overall: good quality, thick, durable, low compression (does not compress easily), medium-to-high frictionThickness: Product is much thicker (wall thickness) than most on Amazon. This means high durability, but much higher force needed to compress and seal.Size: listing states 1/4” OD. Difficult to accurately measure small, round, elastic object, but it appears to be 6mm (0.236”) instead. This is obviously not a problem for most customers, but was a detail I figured should be stated.Material: always hard to judge quality of elastomers without strenuous testing. “Feel” has very little to do with it, so I can only attest to the quality of extrusion, which appears adequate. Additionally, while “TPE” (thermoplastic elastomer, listing’s stated material) is actually a wide category of elastomers, the term used without specification ~usually~ indicates santoprene. With this initial review I have not yet tested the actual composition.Friction: the listing states that it has what is typically referred to a “slip coat” - a surface coating for lower friction that is applied typically to TPE’s, and some are much lower friction than others. This one seems to not be a very low friction coating. This product would be MUCH too high friction for a sliding seal or sweeping seal and should only be used as a compression seal.Overall, good quality product. I only deducted a star because the “slip coat” advertised is nearly non-existent. With any seal, it’s important to find one that fits your needed properties. In my case, it ended up not having the characteristics I needed for my application, but will keep as I may have a use in the future and it’s a great price.
