It sounds like you don't have the 3.5 mm jack completely seated in the device. It may seem like you have inserted the jack completely, but don't be afraid to use some force to make sure the jack is all the way to the bottom. You do not need to "do anything", as a call comes in, you have your headphones on and you simply speak to answer. The mic is always on. The same for making a phone call.
