Last Action Hero [DVD]

Saw this movie when I was a kid, forgot what it was called. When I was told the title couldnt wait to watch it again, even got the grandkids watching it with me. They loved it too

A cult movie.

This is the movie that spelled the beginning of the end of Arnold's action career, sure he had a brief comeback hit with James Cameron True Lies the following year, but his career was never the same after this movie. The critics really had it out for Arnie (after a string of unstoppable hits in the 80's and early 90's). It's a shame because in retrospect it is actually quite a decent movie, it was just released at the wrong time and a big mistake by studio Columbia releasing it opposite Jurassic Park which turned out to be a juggernaut in 1993. The movie features plenty of in jokes that poke fun at the movie industry with references to Die Hard, Predator, ET, Lethal Weapon to name but a few. Also there's a huge slew of famous actors such as Jean Claude Van Damme, Robert Patrick, Sharon Stone making cameos in a Where's Wally style. This is the type of movie that has done really well in the last 10 - 15 year's that I think audience's just weren't ready for it back then. This was Arnold's first film as Producer (in addition to starring in) and was the first movie to feature a 7.1 SDDS sound mix as opposed to the traditional 5.1 Sound mix. The scene where Arnold's Jack Slater is accidentally pounced on by the real Arnold is fun scene. It's always a lot of fun to see Arnold poke fun at himself and especially when they are 2 of him onscreen at the same time. The movie has a lot of snappy one liners and it's a shame that this one of those rare Arnie movies that everyone involved has chosen to forget about. The movie is 27 years old and if a Special Edition ever got released I think it would be done by either Shout Factory or Arrow Video as I can't see Columbia TriStar releasing it. A lot of time has passed now since it's original release and the movie deserves a 2nd look now.

First: I'm really surprised to know how many people relays on "rotten tomatoes" reviews...I think the average voter could be a frustrated housewife or a pink dressed man...no one seems to know nothing about action movies!do not trust them!Second: this film is brilliant!!this is one of Arnie's best, maybe my all time fave!!!I mean... leather jacket, blue jeans, boots and cigar,what else could you need from the coolest man on earth?!?this film is plenty of action, but surprisingly is totally funny,on several occasions I laughed uproariously,I thought to be a child!If you want a great Schwarzenegger, or if you're simply looking for a good old fashioned action movie THIS IS THE ONE.(the "Hamlet scene" is worth more than any other action films of the last 15 years)To Buy.

Brilliant 80s film, better than anything these days.

I literally bought this for one reason, the cover. Upon receiving the Blu-Ray which was rather fast may I add I watched it the same day I received it. The cover is so amazing and this poster in a cinema looked the nuts back in 1993 and made you want to see it more than anything out at the time. The same feeling was felt once again when ripping open the bubble envelope. It lacks extras and the quality isn't great, more a great DVD copy than a HD beast but for its price you get what you get, no complaints overall and this film gets a lot of hate, for reasons I will never agree with. Good release

You know the kind of people who look at you as if youre insane, if you dare say that you like Last Action Hero....well, theyre dicks! This remains one of the best action comedies ever written. And the more you consider it, the deeper it gets, which from a screen writing point of view is almost Zen! Definately Arnnies best film, and Charles Dance breaking the forth wall, is an inspired hint at whats coming next in the film. Brilliant.
