Laura [DVD] [1944]

Laura (1944 - 20th Century Fox. 2disc dvd edition ,released in 2006) Surprisingly until buying this DVD around 3years ago I dont think I'd seen this film. But seeing the combination of director Otto Preminger, the luminous beauty of Gene Tierny, Dana Andrews ,Clifton Webb & Vincent Price in an 'ensemble piece ' gave me some idea it may well be worth a viewing .And...Oh yes, it certainly was ,a wonderful 'Noir-Detective/Mystery/Murder/Love story' with sparkling dialogue, fine acting ,excellent direction ,sets & CinematographyI wasn't aware the title song was a massive hit composed by David Raskin who along with Jeanine Basinger provides a top notch commentary to the film. There's also another fact filled commentary from 'old Hollywood' expert Rudy Behlmer (Best listened to after watching the film )These are on disc 1 ,along with a short 'deleted scene'.There's plenty of descriptions of the film ,so I'll describe the extras & a few other bits n bobs.Disc1 has English language in stereo & mono + French & the film has clear subtitles in English, French & Dutch. The film is in good condition with no noticeable scratches or jumps etc .Disc2 has the following, 'the Obsession' a good 12min appreciation of the film (from 2005) with comments from director Carl Franklin & critics & film historians ,including James Ursini, Alan Silver & Dr Drew Casper.There is 2 excellent documentaries, A slightly sad one on Gene Tierney (44mins 1999) that features a former husband ,family members & Richard Widmark. & shows beauty & talent are not always a passport to happiness.By contrast 'The Versatile Villian' (44mins 1997) documentary is an absolute joy, showing Vincent Price (who is very good in the film ) and features his daughter, various actors including Dennis Hopper, Jane Russell, & director Roger Corman, this has clips from many of his films. This shows him as an educated former stage actor & someone that had a full life outside of Hollywood, being a lecturer ,an art collector & donator of many of his works from his own collection. He also wrote a number of books on cooking & much more. Disc2 also has an original trailer.The extras on disc2 also have clear subtitles. In English - Dutch, French, German ,Italian & Spanish . The film is 84mins ,black & white & is in its original 1:33-1 ratio . '12' certificate.

This one of those b/w 40ies movies that remains fresh in all respects, from its wonderful acting to its memorable soundtrack. Its story captivates, its cinematography is magnificent. I watched it twice in two days, just to enjoy its many qualities. Close to perfection.

If you read David Thompson's review in his 1000 movies you might be thinking this is a grave Freudian nightmare in which Dana Andrews is somehow involved in really 'loving' a dead woman. But really the transition between glum detective work and 'suddenly' being overwhelmed by a 'portrait' of a nice piece is achieved in a rather hokey few minutes, but that was the form - 87 minutes to get into all these things so it's no wonder it's hardly 'convincing'. However, there are some lovely touches and the camera moves smoothly. There is a clear avoidance of a totally cliched ending and there are some lovely witty performances and Gene Tierney is excellent to look at from 7/8 of the angles available to the camera. As ever though, Thompson is a stimulating oppositional reader of the material and his review and Preminger's(via Clifton Webb's character's barbed wit)direction gets the sexualised message across. Vincent Price is fleshily attractive, unattractive and subtle.

A nicely updated release of a film I’ve previously owned and enjoyed and which offers some classy 40’s noir drama.When beautiful young ad executive Laura Hunt is murdered in her apartment, a detective begins to sift through the friends and acquaintances of the victim to try and identify who may have killed her. But as the detective (and the viewer) learns about Laura through flashbacks and stories, he starts to fall in love with the dead woman. Even as events and the truth become more complicated than they first appear to be..........Extras might be the same as an older special edition DVD released many years ago on Steelbook which I once had as many elements look familiar - two commentaries, various radio versions of the play featuring combinations of the films cast, and some interviews alongside a booklet with an essay. There are what’s billed as the ‘theatrical’ and ‘extended’ cut of the film but the latter only runs a minute longer and the disc menu explains one scene has been restored that was removed in 1944 for fear its display of luxury would offend wartime audiences!Classic noir and a well padded release.

Bought this import ca. 3 years ago, have only just watched it with my two sons of 20 and 16 years of age. Both really like the film for me it's a classic film which, if you like film noir, is a must in your collection. It has been released in the UK now. Amongst the extras on this import disc, you'll find both sets of commentary, like the UK release, but 2 x 44 min. documentary, one one Gene Tierney, the other on Vincent Price, and a 12 min. feature on the film. Like the UK release it also have the extended version (2 min. longer) as well theatrical release version. I see the UK release have some extras missing from this on, but if you have already bought the UK version, you could do worse than to supplement that version with the import one, just for those extras.

Film magnifique et merveilleux, film noir certes mais pas seulement, hybride, un enchantement qui vous comble et vous échappe. Sans doute LE rôle de Gene Tierney : je n'ai pas vu tous ses autres films mais comment pourrait-elle être plus belle, séduisante, mystérieuse et vulnérable (donc désirable), incarnation idéale de son personnage, qu'ici ? Scénario ébouriffant, qui entrelace une trame policière pleine de fausses pistes et de rebondissements avec des intrigues amoureuses pas moins complexes et surprenantes. Photographie, éclairage et mouvements de caméra d'une beauté et d'une fluidité impeccables etc, etc. Et aussi : la maîtrise des variations de rythme et de tension au long du film, qui fait "sortir" du temps, perdre sa perception, ce qui contribue à l'enchantement qu'on ressent à suivre cette histoire qui nous captive et nous transporte, en souhaitant qu'elle ne se finisse pas.

Los coleccionistas del cine clásico suelen enfrentarse al difícil problema de elegir la mejor edición en bluray de las películas que ya tienen en DVD. El criterio más acertado siempre es conseguir la versión publicada por una major (Fox, MGM, Columbia, SONY...), evitando las editadas en España en discos de 25Gb con aspecto de top manta. Sin embargo, muchas veces nos encontramos con otro dilema: la mejor edición viene en español latino y los extras sin subtitular en ningún idioma. Si se domina el inglés, la elección está clara. Si no, se puede combinar el nuevo blu-ray con nuestros discos DVD. Exactamente este es el caso en esta edición de Laura.La valoración de la imagen es de 10. Con su poco de grano, como manda la época. Quien no quiera verlo, siempre puede ajustar el televisor hasta conseguir la reducción de ruído que desee. La banda sonora en inglés tiene la mejor calidad también para una película de los años cuarenta, pero se entienden bien los diálogos bajo esa banda sonora tan maravillosa y obsesiva.Los extras son los siguientes:- Dos comentarios en audio de críticos cinematográficos.- Documental de 45 minutos sobre la vida de Gene Tierney, con la hija y su primer marido- Documental de 45 minutos sobre la vida de Vincent Price.- La versión extendida, con la escena eliminada sobre la educación de Laura .- Documental La obsesión. Unos minutos analizando el cine negro a través de la película.- El trailer.Antes de acabar, unas últimas consideraciones. La primera es que la carátula del blu-ray de Francia no anuncia que la película está en español latino, aunque sí esté. En segundo lugar, esta edición es EXACTAMENTE la misma que el DVD editado en España. Aquí se ha llevado a cabo una transferencia de todo el contenido al formato blu-ray, perdiendo los subtítulos en castellano de los extras y la banda sonora en castellano de la película. Por último, la pregunta recurrente: ¿merece la pena entonces este bluray? Personalmente opino que sí por la excelente calidad de la imagen y el sonido orginal. Aunque suene cutre decirlo, más aún escribirlo, una alternativa consistiría en poner ambas ediciones en DVD y blu-ray juntas en la estantería para elegir aquella que nos viniera mejor y así poder disfrutar la película y sus extras en todo su esplendor.

Otto Preminger schuf mit "Laura" wohl einen der bemerkenswertesten Film-Noirs der Filmgeschichte.- Handlung: "Nie werde ich das Wochenende vergessen, an dem Laura starb." Mit diesen Worten beginnt der Film aus Sicht des arroganten Journalisten Waldo Leydecker (Clifton Webb). Die Ermittlungen um die Ermordung von Laura Hunt führt der Polizist Mark McPherson (Dana Andrews), der beginnt, sich durch ein Gemälde in die Tote zu verlieben. Plötzlich taucht Laura (Gene Tierney) wieder auf, und das Rätsel um die angebliche Ermordung von Laura beginnt.Die Besetzung des Films ist großartig: Vincent Price als Lauras softiger Verlobter Shelby Carpenter, Judith Anderson (bekannt geworden durch ihre Rolle der Mrs. Danvers in Hitchcocks "Rebecca") als Lauras eifersüchtige Tante Ann Treadwell, Clifton Webb als Lauras snobistischer Freund und Mentor Waldo Leydecker und natürlich Gene Tierney als Laura Hunt glänzen in diesem atmosphärisch dichten Film-Noir-Klassiker.1. DVD: Im Hauptmenü besteht zwar die Möglichkeit, den Film mit der damals von der Fox um 2 Minuten gekürzten Sequenz abzuspielen (dafür muss man den Film im Menü "Sonderausstattung" starten), allerdings wird die entfernte Szene ziemlich amateurhaft "hineingeschnitten", so dass in den Übergängen Szenen wiederholt werden. "Gewollt aber nicht Gekonnt" war hier wohl das Motto. Es stimmt aber, dass der Film damals für 5 Oscars nominiert wurde, und einen für die "Beste Kamera (Joseph LaShelle)" bekam.Hut ab! Fox hat es geschafft, eine DVD herzustellen, an der Film(-Noir)-Fans ihre helle Freude haben. Sieht man von dem Problem mit der entfernten Szene auf der 1. DVD ab, kann man nur sagen: Vorbildlich!
