646015 Soffit Exhaust Vent, White

Bathroom fan died and needed to update the outdoor vent to 4 inch duct. The problem is my vent is about 20 foot off the ground overhead, so I ended up buying three different under eave vents to see what would be the easiest to mount. (two from Amazon, one from Lowes) They all have some problems but I found this one to be the best overall. (IMHO)Pros: The vent tube that attaches to the cover easily removes which made it easy to mark the hole for cutting/fitting. (I used my dremel tool to increase size of the existing hole) The back-draft flap was the best design because it just has a weight that when mounted facing the ground closes perfectly. (I don't live in the coldest climate so I can't speak to it freezing shut, but this addressed in other reviews) The cover is attractive and only needed one small change to better mount which was easy to make. (see below)Cons: only two problems. 1. I have vinyl siding roof eaves and two mounting screws were not adequate. (too few and too short) I used four self tapping 2 3/4" screws (added two holes where the side slats show on the vent - see prod pic) 2. Vent tube was a little too easy to pop loose from the vent cover when mounting. Once I got it fitted I just put a bead of silicone and snapped together...solid.My install was a pain because I was so far in the air on a ladder but this was the best choice from the vents I looked at. (again IMHO)

I bought this while helping a friend add a bath exhaust, where a wall vent was impractical and a roof vent unthinkable.Soffit venting exhausts (properly)was still a misunderstood technique around here; with most relying on standard soffit vents to accept bath exhaust (and to rot out the soffit - but that a bit later and generally unexpected).This worked well to get the exhaust outside the soffit and has held up well. However, it seemed a bit fragile to me, working with it. The bathroom was on the outside wall, so we had no end of obstacles retrofitting the duct through the cramped space in the attic. It was probably having to work with it in an awkward situation that gave me the impression of less than robust construction; probably unreasonable, in retrospect. I'm sure it would be perfectly serviceable in new construction.Incidentally, I still regularly see these ducts improperly vented into the soffit.

This item is not very well made, the instructions are terrible - says to cut 6 inch hole then use screws to mount grill. Problem is a six inch hole is larger than the screws so you can't mount the grill.The unit also snaps into place and does not hold very well, any little movement and it comes loose. I even used super glue to hold it and it still came loose.This item is very poorly designed and should not be sold.Don't waste your money.

The duct side of this needs to be 3/8" taller to allow the flapper to fully open. The flapper also doesn't make a complete seal - there was more than a 1/4" gap between the flapper and side. With a plane, I trimmed the flapper to make a 1/16" gap. Overall, a poorly designed piece. Look at the Panasonic EZ Soffit Vent for a much better alternative.

Good value and delivered as promised

Very good quality item. Could not use as slant of soffit was too shallow to allow installation. Recommend item if enough room between roof slant and soffit to accommodate ductwork and vent.

The Canplas Soffit vent is just OK. What they did not take into consideration is the distance between the soffit and the plywood roof.On a normal pitch roof the height of the vent becomes a problem.You will have to alter the vent (cut it down to fit) for it to fit under the soffit.Just remember if you alter this vent you will need to resize the vent pipe.
