The apex of sharpening precision.
Ah, the Derwent Manual Helical Desktop Sharpener—a paragon of precision in a world overrun by the mediocrity of electronic gadgetry. You see, in this age of digital dullness, to take pencil in hand is an act of rebellion, and to sharpen it, well, that's the artistic flourish.Uncrate this little marvel and immediately its build declares itself—a sturdy fellow with a helical blade, ready to face even the most cantankerous of graphite cores. Mount it onto the desk, and it holds fast, a Gibraltar against the tides of flimsy plastic alternatives.Turn its handle, and my, what euphoria! A ballet of shavings spirals down, leaving behind a pencil tip so impeccably honed, it could draft blueprints or sketch a masterpiece. This sharpener doesn't merely hone pencils; it elevates them to the realm of artistic weaponry. So, if you're keen on transcending the realm of blunt, uninspiring lines, the Derwent Manual Helical Desktop Sharpener isn't just a choice—it's an imperative. A masterstroke in design, it brings ceremony back to the simple act of pencil-sharpening. Need I say more? Five stars.

Best sharpener for fine art drawing.
Best sharpener ever! I love this for getting proper points on my art pencils. The desk clamp has not really worked for me as it doesn't secure well to a rounded edge table. But that hasn't been a problem as I just hold the device down with one hand when sharpening. I have been really pleasantly surprised by the high quality results.

Poor Product Overall
I purchased this as I recognised Derwent as a decent brand name. However, the first one I received was faulty in that the desk clamp did not work (the wingnut just did not grip the thread and tighten) and also more importantly, could not access the blade to clean. The access was supposed to be an simple anti-clockwise twist of the handle base but it was was firmly jammed and would not open. I returned as faulty and got a replacement. This one at least allows me to access the blade, but again the desk clamp does not work for the same reason. It does sharpen the pencils effectively but just frustrating that it does not deliver on all levels.

Great results with some frustrations
The results obtained from this sharpener are amazing – providing it is used for non oil-based pencils etc.; at least, that is my experience (I have yet to try it out on pastel pencils and charcoal pencils). The points of oil based coloured pencils tend to break off in the sharpener , necessitating poking out the broken tip with a piece of stiff wire.. Though this is not difficult, it can be a bit frustrating! I found the clamp fairly useless and prefer to hold the sharpener in my left hand (I am right handed) while turning the crank with my right. Also the instructions are a bit basic and could do with some elaboration as to how to actually use the device. However, forgetting the drawbacks, the results achieved are superb!

Broke after 3 months
Brilliant to begin with, beautifully long, sharp point to all my pencils - but it has just broken and refuses to sharpen anything. As I've only had it since May and the returns window has closed, I'm not terribly impressed.

Very Frustrating
This has been a very frustrating sharpener to use as more often than not the tip of the pencil would break off in the sharpener and had to use a very fine and sharp piece of wire to retrieve the broken pencil tip so it has not been a very pleasant experience using this particular sharper and so my mission to find a near perfect sharpener goes on!

Brilliant sharpener
I bought mine used and it's perfect while saving over half the price. It sharpens to a very fine point which is great for colored pencil work. One thing that may be a downside is the clamps that hold the pencil in place will likely mark the pencils casing if that bothers you, but it doesn't damage the integrity of the pencil it's more like little scuff marks.Edit: I noticed some issues mentioned with the sharpener stopping working, for me this happened when a colored pencil lead got broken and stuck inside while sharpening. There is a maintenence video on derwents yt that shows you how to dismantle and clean it. Once I did that it worked perfectly again. Also it helps to run a graphite pencil through it every now and again as it lubricates the blades

Fijne puntenslijper!

Makes incredibly sharp pencils.
I am rewriting my review on this sharpener and giving it five stars instead of four. It is a fantastic sharpener, and gets my colored pencils razor sharp. It does the harder little pencils best, but can also sharpen the softer leaded pencils if you are careful. My main problem with it, and what originally made me give it four stars is the jaws on the part that holds the pencil tight against the sharpener seem to lose its grip a little over time. But Even though I think some of that is true, the main problem is when the tips of pencils break off in the back of the sharpener. That speaks more to the quality of pencil that I had in than anything, but it is very annoying. With Polychromos or quality harder leaded pencils, I don’t think I’ve ever had a problem, not on one pencil. I have however had a problem with some prisma colors. Their leads like to break off inside the sharpener and you have to take the whole thing apart to get it out or it won’t work.you have to be judicious on those and understand it is just their nature. This is also true for the cheaper pencils of all different types. If you have a pencil from the dollar store like crazy art, Crayola, etc. it’s a tossup to where you’re going to get a good point. This pencil sharpener is mainly geared toward professional grade or at least High quality student grade pencils. If you bear that in mind, it’s a 5 star pencil sharpener.

Great sharpener.
Sharpens really well without breaking off the points of the pencils. I’m pleased with it.
