This is an illustrated history of "Space Race 2.o", which is to say, a brief overview of the space programs -- now plural -- starting with the NASA effort and continuing into the ventures by a new space industry, with the Blue Horizon program (Jeff Bezos), the Virgin Galactic program with Richard Branson, and, more and more in the narrative, Elon Musk's Space X, which seems to be the foremost effort at this point. The book takes us up to the start of 2024, and charts the various Space X efforts, from the Starlink satellite program to the recent Starship launches. NASA is still in the picture with its Artemis program and its cooperation with Space X, but the latter is definitely a leading effort. The book does sketch Musk's biography but mainly describes his role as a propulsive force behind Space X and its future vision. The book itself is a vivid telling, its prose succinct and the book well-illustrated -- the illustrations can be described as a coffee-table look but the pictures, both photographic and simulations, do complement and add to the narration. In all, the book is a good snapshot of the program at this point, and where it aims to go.

The "SpaceX" label is embossed on the front, the rest of the cover is printed. Inside, it isn't just about SpaceX or Elon Musk, it discusses the state of the world pre and post 2020 pandemic and the impact of the close of the Cold War on space related activities, as well as other issues (like the 2008 mortgage crash) and retiring the Space Shuttle. It has a brief bio of Musk then gets into his different companies and the timeline, and development of SpaceX's amazing hardware. The pictures throughout are stunning. Some, like the Mercury 7, I've seen many times, but not as a full page high quality print in a hardcover book. Once I started reading it was tough to stop since it went over in some detail news events I'd witnessed live. With the good descriptions and excellent photos it is almost like watching a documentary. Very happy I'd gone ahead and ordered this book.

As someone who grew up, fascinated by space and flying machines, I was really looking forward to reading this book and checking the photography and details of the Space-X crafts. This book blew me away. As someone who began drawing B-25 Mitchells from WWII diagrams and maintenance manuals, this was a welcome addition to my book collection. Mr. Bergan has done an excellent job in delivering a wonderful book that is not a slobbering, over emblazing nod to Mr. Musk but has created a well-written and detailed account of the creation and evolution of what will most likely be seen in history as the driving force for space travel by the human race. Think Zefram Cochrane. The photography is beautiful, the pages are high-quality, the print is excellent. The cover is nicely done. The writing, details, and research is wonderful. Good job, Mr. Bergan. HIGH RECOMMENDED for any space travel fan.
