On a beautiful day at the beach, a young boy brings his bucket, shovel, and imagination, and builds a perfect sand castle. Right away, a dragon moves in. The boy decides to befriend his dragon and they spend time roaming the shore, flying a kite, braving the waves, defying bullies, and roasting marshmallows—all while Dad is busy sunbathing and Mom is engrossed in her book. Unfortunately, no one believes the boy when he tries to share the news of this magnificent creature. That’s when the mischief begins, and the dragon becomes a force to be reckoned with. While adults will recognize the naughty antics as a ploy for attention, children will dissolve into giggles as the dragon devours every last sandwich, blows bubbles in the lemonade, and leaves claw prints in the brownies. Maybe the dragon really is running amok on the beach, or maybe it’s a little boy’s imagination that is running wild. Review: A book you will love just as much as your kiddos - My mom purchased this book for my boys that I just had to get on the kindle. The art is fantastic and my kids love the imagination behind a little boys day at the beach. When a Dragon Moves in is a tale about a family outing at the beach in which a little boy builds a sandcastle and through the use of imagination a dragon moves in causing all kinds of ruckus. When in fact it's the little boy causing trouble but using his imagination that the dragon is the one causing all the trouble. The artwork is phenomenal and the story is outstanding where children's using their imagination is the most important thing at their young age. I can't wait to pick up the next story in this series When a Dragon Moves in Again but we're gonna wait until Christmas. Great read for a bedtime story. Review: Sweet story, amazing illustrations - My son loves this book. The story is short and sweet. The illustrations are ANAZING. I thought it was a sweet story about a little boy’s imaginary dragon. I understand some parents’ concern about the little boy blaming the dragon for the things he’s doing, however, 1) The boy gets in trouble for these things, 2) By the end, he effectively puts his dragon (ie his “acting out” self) in time out until “he can learn some manners,” and 3) My 4 year old picked up right away that the boy was also being naughty, and he’s telling fibs by blaming it all on the dragon. He didn’t get the message from this that it’s okay to act out. If anything, he gleaned the opposite. So I suppose it depends on the individual kid, as well as the parent’s personal taste re: how strict you are with what your child is allowed to read about. If you feel any depiction of “naughty” behavior (such as sneaking brownies and blowing bubbles in your lemonade) is going to cause your child to act out, then I suppose this book isn’t for you.

Favorite Summer Read
This book is easily my favorite summer picture book read. My children and I enjoyed the imaginative, fun, and funny story arc. The amazing, colorful illustrations perfectly complement the scenes of the story. My love for dragons only underscores my appreciation for this book.

Best children's book ever (But I liked it too!)
After reading so many books to my kids, and watching them lose interest after the first few pages, I began to think nothing would keep their interest from cover to cover... Until I read this book to them.... Both kids were fascinated from the very first page, and had me re-read sections while they looked at, and touched the pictures. The illustrations are magical, and the story is appealing on many levels. This one is a winner! I know because it's the very first book that my children want me to read to them over and over... And I love the artwork! Two thumbs up!

LOVE this Book!
I'm a teacher and we had a Mythical Creatures theme for one week and of COURSE I had to include dragons! This book made my kids laugh so loudly, they made me laugh! It also engaged their curious nature by allowing them to search for different typical beach items that could be used to help the boy make-believe that there really was a dragon living in his sandcastle. We also built sand castles that day in science and during rest time I put little dragon figures in the castles we made - they LOVED this book. It facilitated independent and creative learning and is still on the daily request list over 2 months later. Great job!

Dragons and Sand Castles-a Recipe for Adventure
WHEN A DRAGON MOVES INto your world, be prepared for a day packed with adventure. This is quite evident when a dragon moves into a little boy’s sandcastle during a family excursion to the beach. When the child’s family is too busy to play with him, the boy creates his own version of companionship—a marshmallow toasting, raft floating, sandwich gobbling dragon. They have fun. They explore. They get into innocent mischief. ~All the things that dragons and little boys are meant to do. This wonderful summer-themed story will most definitely edge its way into fall, winter, and spring story time requests. The pacing of the story is bouncy quick. The meaning behind the story, however, is everlasting. While the target audience of the book is children ages 3 through 7, the lesson learned from the story will apply to the grownups that read the story to their little ones—Take time to travel through the world of imagination with the children in your life. Who knows—even you might find a dragon at your doorstep.

Great for little boys
My 3 and 4 year old boys love this book. The story is interesting and easy to read to them and they love the pictures. And of course they also love dragons and beaches so it is the perfect combination.
