Can't believe it took me so long to read (Kindle Edition)
I enjoyed the first part of this book. I enjoyed reading about the shock of being in a new land with completely different customs and how the protagonist deals with it. I liked the political machinations of the daimyos less so, but I understand their importance to the overall story. I'm excited to start part 2!Disclaimer: I do not like the fact that the publisher split this into 2 parts since the announcement of the TV show. I understand that the original publication was 2 parts, however, the ebook has always been one volume.

This book has survived well since 1975
I first read this book while posted to the island of Ponape in the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands [now Pohnpei, Federated States of Micronesia] in 1977. I was out in the boonies at the old Forestry Station and, over the course of a Thanksgiving holiday, read the entire book. I am excited to do so again now, 46+ years later. It is well-written and keeps one thoroughly enmeshed in the storyline. I strongly encourage anyone interested to read it and if you have seen the old Shogun mini-series or are considering the new version, read the book first. It is much richer in every aspect.

spectacular launch into a strange new world
Conveys a time and place in immaculate details. Feels like you’re there. A barbarian European in Japan. The collision and intermingling of cultures. The samurais, the sailors, the life. Poetic and beautiful.

Compelling
I read this when it was first published, and it has aged well. Intrigue, exploration of culture, complicated story lines that are well written, and more.Enjoy!

it’s never simple
The story of men and war, culture and politics, then religion too. This masterpiece for all its flaws is a must-read for anyone interested in this remarkable part of history.

Historical fiction at its finest
James Clavells Shogun is captivating. Rich characters, beautiful settings and unpredictable story lines. This is my second time reading and it was an even better experience this time. Must read.
