Alter Eco | Chocolate Bars | Pure Dark Cocoa, Fair Trade, Organic, Non-GMO, Gluten Free (12-Pack Super Blackout)

This review is for the 90% chocolate bar. This bar is an acquired taste, but once you have acquired that taste there is no going back. I love very dark chocolate, and have had very dark chocolate from many companies, and this is the best of them all. The combination of chocolate, fruitiness, sweetness, consistency, and mouth feel is unmatched. This is not a chocolate to be chewed, but best left to melt in the mouth. If you do this you will see that it is not as bitter as you might expect. If you want to cut sugar from your diet you might be happy to know that it would take about seven of these bars to equal the amount of sugar in one can of Coca Cola. You are also helping a sustainable farm that provides jobs for a local community, as well as keeping the environment healthy. So, for many reasons, I believe this is the best 90% dark chocolate you can buy. I have placed thee orders so far for this chocolate through Amazon and have never had problems with quality.

This chocolate is clean and dark!!!! I love that there’s no processed sugar and it is very chocolately! If it’s your first time having chocolate this dark, you will find it weird at first, but my husband loves it and uses it for its health benefits! It does melt well.

Ingredients are simple and good. Flavor is fairly bright and cirtusy. I ordered a 12 pack of the 90%, and they all arrived in cool-temperature weather. All the bars are bloomed and chalky, many with punctures in the foil packaging. I’m not going to be too upset since 90-95% dark chocolate is my sole dessert, and I’ll nibble on it slow enough for the texture not to matter.

I have been buying Alter Eco Chocolate Bars and Truffles for years, including through Amazon. In the past two months, I have had to return both the chocolate bars -today - and truffles - a few weeks ago. Something is wrong with the product. It has a weird, ashy, burnt undertaste that stays with you for hours. The chocolate bars that I returned today were inedible, as were the truffles that I returned a few weeks back. I do not know whether the problem is Amazon’s or Alter Eco’s but, if it’s Amazon selling old or rejected chocolate, then Alter Eco should take note, because I am switching to Lindt or another premium chocolate. Seriously, inedible only begins to describe how foul these chocolate bars were; I even considering saving the one I’d opened, in case I had food poisoning. (I sent it back with the box.)

I ordered this specifically because of the sustainability practices used throughout the process of making these bars. I haven’t seen many other companies that offer chocolate with this level of environmental concern. I. Addition to that the bars are delicious. The chocolate is dark, don’t expect overly sugary taste, but it has a nice flavor for what it offers. I will continue to purchase these to relieve my chocolate craving.

Unfortunately, the all the chocolate bars in this particular box (12 pack) of Alter Eco 90% dark chocolate are stale and slightly bloomed (slight whitish appearance; a typical sign of deteriorating chocolate). The texture is crunchy and brittle, not soft. Although the expiration date is 5/17/26 (not expired), this product must have been stored at the wrong temperature, or in otherwise non-ideal conditions for maintaining freshness.
